The Niger Delta Students Union Government (NIDSUG) has ushered in a new era of leadership, with a firm pledge to champion sustainable peace and elevate educational standards across the region. This renewed commitment was declared by the union's newly elected National President, Comrade Chika Precious Uchechukwu, during his acceptance speech in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, January 4, 2026.
A Mandate for Peace and Progress
Following a keenly contested national election, Comrade Uchechukwu emerged victorious and immediately outlined his administration's core focus. He stressed that his leadership will prioritize constructive engagement and sustained dialogue as tools to curb youth restiveness. The president emphasized that lasting peace is a non-negotiable foundation for any meaningful educational growth and regional development in the Niger Delta.
"We are not just students; we are the intellectual vanguard of a region brimming with potential yet beset by complex realities," Uchechukwu stated. He acknowledged the region's struggle with environmental degradation and socio-economic challenges, which directly impact young people, adding, "We carry the dreams of our communities, communities that bear the weight of environmental strain, underdevelopment, and the constant quest for equitable resource control."
Strategic Advocacy and Student Empowerment Agenda
Moving forward, NIDSUG plans to shift from mere rhetoric to actionable, evidence-based advocacy. Uchechukwu announced that his administration would be anchored on four pillars: inclusive governance, strategic advocacy, academic excellence, and student empowerment.
A key part of improving student welfare involves active engagement with major institutions. The new president pledged to dialogue with university authorities, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, and other relevant bodies. The goal of these engagements is to secure more scholarships, create internship opportunities, and advocate for significantly improved educational infrastructure for students throughout the Niger Delta.
New Executive Council Inaugurated
The electoral process that brought in the new leadership was concluded under the supervision of the Chief Returning Officer, Pastor Tanam Gospel. He announced the results in line with Section 29F of the NIDSUG Constitution (2011), formally declaring Uchechukwu as the duly elected President.
The newly elected national executive council includes:
- Comrade Onorhivwe Destiny as National Vice President (Administration)
- Assor Favour as National Vice President (Projects)
- Owonifa Josephine Tolulope as National Vice President (West)
- Ojikpong Alexander as National Vice President (North)
Other key officials are Aighowamhi O. Mascot (National Secretary-General), Sunyene Patrick Udofia (Assistant Secretary), Wenibo Solomon Peaceful (National Treasurer), Jackson Isuho Okon (Financial Secretary), and Frederick Bassey Ita (National Public Relations Officer).
Stakeholders view this election and inauguration as the start of a fresh chapter for NIDSUG. The union is now poised to reposition itself as a formidable voice for peace, academic excellence, and sustainable development among the student population of the Niger Delta.
