Alumni Intervention Critical for Reviving Nigeria's Struggling Public Schools
The Annunciation Catholic College, Irrua Old Boys Association (ACCIOBA) has emphasized that stronger involvement from alumni bodies could play a pivotal role in addressing the severe decline in infrastructure and educational standards affecting numerous public secondary schools across Nigeria. This crucial perspective was shared during a significant book launch and global reunion event, where members gathered to unveil a publication titled "The Making of a Great School", which meticulously documents the history and development of their alma mater.
Massive Financial Investment and Infrastructure Restoration
Dr Joseph Ohens, the Global President of ACCIOBA, detailed how alumni intervention was instrumental in reviving the school after years of profound neglect. He explained that members mobilized substantial resources to restore critical facilities and dramatically improve the learning environment. Ohens disclosed that the association has expended approximately N3.5 billion on rebuilding essential infrastructure, including modern classrooms, fully equipped laboratories, renovated hostels, and upgraded internal road networks within the school compound.
According to Dr Ohens, the institution had deteriorated to an alarming state over the years, reaching a point where there was only a single principal and a mere three teachers responsible for educating more than 800 students. He stated that the intervention by the old boys was fundamentally driven by a deep sense of responsibility and gratitude to support the institution that laid the foundational groundwork for their successful careers and personal development.
Fundraising and Historical Preservation Efforts
Efe Akhigbe, the Chairman of the ACCIOBA Lagos branch, highlighted that the recent event was strategically aimed at raising additional funds to support the ongoing development projects within the school. Akhigbe noted that in recent years, the alumni association has embarked on an extensive and comprehensive reconstruction of various facilities, including science laboratories, academic classrooms, and the principal's official residence.
He further added that the book project was initiated with the primary objective of preserving the institution's rich history by meticulously documenting the experiences and memories of its earliest students and distinguished alumni. This effort ensures that the school's legacy is accurately captured and passed on to future generations.
Compiling a Legacy Through Extensive Research
Pius Akhimien, the author of the book and a respected lecturer at Lagos State University, provided detailed insight into the research process. He explained that the project involved conducting extensive and in-depth interviews with members of the pioneer graduating class and numerous other alumni. These personal narratives and historical accounts were then carefully compiled into a cohesive and authoritative historical record, intended to preserve the institution's enduring legacy and inspire future students and benefactors.
The collective efforts of ACCIOBA serve as a powerful testament to the potential impact of organized alumni networks in reversing the decline of public educational institutions, offering a replicable model for other schools across Nigeria facing similar challenges of underfunding and infrastructural decay.
