In a significant development for Nigeria's education sector, Aptech has joined forces with Scope Global Skills University (SGSU) to provide Nigerian students with an accessible pathway to international technology education. The partnership announced on November 28, 2025, introduces a budget-friendly 36-month Bachelor of Vocation (B.Voc.) degree program in Information Technology with specialized focus on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.
Bridging Nigeria's Tech Skills Gap
This collaborative initiative directly addresses the persistent shortage of skilled technology professionals in Nigeria's rapidly expanding digital economy. Despite Nigeria's position as one of Africa's most dynamic tech hubs, particularly in Lagos, the industry continues to face challenges in finding adequately trained personnel with modern IT competencies.
The program specifically targets the mismatch between traditional academic qualifications and the practical skills demanded by today's global employers. Many Nigerian graduates complete their education without acquiring the hands-on technical capabilities needed to immediately contribute to the workforce.
Unique Blended Learning Model
The innovative program structure combines local convenience with international exposure through a carefully designed two-phase approach:
First 18 Months in Nigeria: Students begin their academic journey at Aptech centers located across Nigeria. This initial phase emphasizes practical technical training covering essential programming languages and tools including C programming, Java, Python, SQL Server, and AI-enhanced web development using React. Simultaneously, SGSU provides complementary academic modules to ensure students develop a solid theoretical foundation.
Final 18 Months in India: After successfully completing the first phase, students transition to SGSU's campus in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh for immersive residential studies. This advanced stage delves into sophisticated topics including data science with MongoDB, deep learning methodologies, AI-driven computer vision, cross-platform mobile app development, and a comprehensive capstone project.
Leadership Perspectives and Program Benefits
Kallol Mukherjee, Executive Vice President for International Business at Aptech, emphasized the organization's two-decade commitment to enhancing Nigeria's vocational training landscape. "This model directly addresses the market's need for graduates who are not just educated, but employable from day one," Mukherjee stated, highlighting the program's focus on connecting Nigerian talent with global digital opportunities.
Dr. Vijay Singh, Vice Chancellor of SGSU, reinforced the university's educational philosophy of blending rigorous academic theory with practical, hands-on application. He noted that hosting Nigerian students in India for their final 18 months provides complete immersion in an advanced learning environment, significantly enhancing the educational experience.
The B.Voc. qualification holds approval from India's University Grants Commission (UGC) and enjoys international recognition, enabling graduates to pursue further studies or compete effectively in global job markets. The program prepares students for high-demand roles including AI/ML Engineer, Data Scientist, Data Analyst, Full-Stack Developer, and AI-focused App Developer.
Eligibility requirements include completion of A-level, WASSCE, or equivalent secondary education, along with demonstrated English proficiency. The program's affordability makes it a competitive alternative to study options in Western countries, potentially opening doors for a broader range of Nigerian learners. Applications for the inaugural cohort are currently being accepted.
