Nigerian Graduate Opens Up on How Class Representative Hindered His Academic and Career Goals
A Nigerian university graduate has come forward with a compelling story detailing how the actions of his class representative during his studies prevented him from graduating with a first-class degree and pursuing his dream career as a lecturer. In a heartfelt post shared on the social media platform X, the graduate, identified as @GloriousGod01, recounted the emotional ordeal that left him devastated but ultimately led to a surprising turn of events.
The Setback That Changed His Academic Trajectory
During his university years, the graduate studied tirelessly with a clear objective: to achieve a first-class honours degree, which in his department automatically qualified graduates for retention as graduate assistants. This pathway typically led to a full lecturing position after completing a master's degree. However, his aspirations were shattered due to an incident involving his class representative.
The class rep collected money from students for what was described as a compulsory textbook. Allegedly, the representative pocketed the funds instead of purchasing the materials. As a result, students who did not pay had 30 marks automatically deducted from their total score of 100 in a key exam. The graduate, who chose not to pay, wrote the exam out of 70 instead of 100. He scored 56 out of 70, which translated to a C grade. Had he paid, his score would have been 86 out of 100, securing an A.
This single C grade cost him the first-class degree by a mere 0.03 points. In his X post, he expressed his initial devastation, stating, "I cried. I was devastated. But I forgave him, let it go, and refused to dwell on it. I trusted that God knows best and has a better plan."
From Disappointment to Triumph
Despite the major setback, the graduate's story did not end in despair. Years later, he revealed that the experience has turned into a blessing. He now earns more than twice what most lecturers make in Nigeria, showcasing how resilience and faith can lead to unexpected success. His post has gone viral, sparking widespread reactions on social media.
Social Media Reactions and Broader Context
Users on X responded with messages of support and admiration. @BukolaOni10 commented, "56/70 couldn’t stop your destiny. Resilience, faith, and focus turned a setback into a greater win. Truly inspiring." Similarly, @Wellness_Tosin noted, "I love that for you. You didn't let that define what you would eventually become." These reactions highlight a broader conversation about academic integrity and personal perseverance in the face of adversity.
This story echoes other narratives in Nigerian academia, such as a Covenant University graduate who battled self-doubt despite earning a first-class degree, and another graduate who shared principles for achieving academic excellence. It underscores the challenges students often face, including potential corruption and unfair practices within educational institutions.
The graduate's experience serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of ethical conduct in academic settings and the power of determination to overcome obstacles. While his dream of becoming a lecturer was derailed, his journey demonstrates that setbacks can pave the way for alternative paths to success.
