Commonwealth Universities Leaders Conference in Abuja Postponed Over Security Fears

Organisers of the upcoming Commonwealth Universities Leaders Conference have announced the postponement of the event, originally set for April 23 to 24 in Abuja, due to significant security concerns. The conference, organized by the Commonwealth Institute of Advanced and Professional Studies, aimed to gather university leaders, policymakers, and education stakeholders from across the Commonwealth to deliberate on the future of higher education, foster collaboration, and enhance institutional leadership.

Security Assessments Lead to Event Delay

In a statement released yesterday, the organisers confirmed that recent security reports and thorough assessments have compelled the decision to postpone. They emphasized that consultations are currently ongoing with key stakeholders, including security agencies, institutional partners, and invited delegates, to determine a new date and venue that guarantees the safety and full participation of all attendees.

Dammy Sanyaolu, Head of Administration for the Local Organising Committee, stated, "The decision reflects our unwavering commitment to providing a secure and conducive environment for meaningful engagement. The conference remains a top priority and will proceed once all necessary arrangements are finalized to ensure a safe setting."

Kwara Lawmaker Escapes Assassination Attempt

In a related development, Dr Ahmed Adam Saba, the member representing Edu/Moro/Patigi Federal Constituency in Kwara State, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt by suspected gunmen. The legislator confirmed the incident to journalists in Ilorin, describing how he avoided the attack by a whisker.

Saba has called on the Nigeria Police Force to thoroughly investigate the assault, which he believes was a sponsored attack aimed at taking his life. He urged law enforcement agencies not only to probe the incident but also to bring both the sponsors and perpetrators to justice as a deterrent to others. Despite the traumatic event, the lawmaker vowed that the attack would not deter him from continuing to serve his constituents diligently.

The attack occurred at Tsaragi in Edu Local Council of Kwara State as Saba was leaving a social function, underscoring the persistent security challenges in the region.
