Covenant University Student Dies After Developing Breathing Problem During Campus Football Match
A tragic incident has occurred at Covenant University in Ota, Ogun State, where a 500-level student lost his life after developing severe breathing difficulties while participating in a football match on campus. The student, identified as Toluwase Jesutunmise Emmanuel, popularly known as Tunmise, was a Building Technology student who was actively involved in the university's Chancellor's Cup tournament.
University's Official Statement on the Incident
According to an official statement released by the university and signed by Vice-Chancellor Professor Timothy A. Anake, the student's death resulted from a previously undisclosed heart condition. The university administration has strongly denied any allegations of negligence or insufficient medical equipment during the emergency response.
The statement detailed that Tunmise had voluntarily stepped out of the football match after complaining of leg pains and general fatigue. Shortly afterward, fellow students noticed he was struggling to breathe and immediately rushed him to the university's medical center for urgent attention.
Medical Response Efforts
University doctors reportedly administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) using an automated external defibrillator (AED) in an attempt to revive the student. Despite these emergency measures, all efforts to save Tunmise's life proved unsuccessful. The Vice-Chancellor further stated that university management, including himself, remained at the Medical Centre from the time of the incident until the student's parents arrived.
