Covenant University Student's Family Breaks Silence, Demands Transparency Over Death
The family of Covenant University student Toluwalase Jesutunmise Emmanuel has broken their silence for the first time, raising serious concerns about the official narrative surrounding his untimely death. In a public statement shared online, the family pointed to material inconsistencies between the university's account and eyewitness reports, calling for greater transparency, accountability, and an independent review of the circumstances.
Family Questions University's Narrative and Timeline
In their statement, the family expressed deep concern that conclusions were communicated publicly before a full and independent investigation could be conducted. They highlighted unresolved questions regarding the exact timeline of events, Toluwalase's condition at the point of intervention, and the nature, timing, and adequacy of the emergency response provided by the university's medical center.
"Based on what was directly witnessed at the scene and the information currently available to us, there appear to be material inconsistencies between the University's narrative and the sequence of events as understood by the family," the statement read. The family emphasized that these are not minor details but central issues requiring careful and transparent clarification to ensure justice and public confidence.
Call for Independent Review and Accountability
The family is currently reviewing all relevant information, including medical records and eyewitness accounts, and is taking steps to ensure these are independently assessed. They noted that no complete or sufficiently verified medical explanation has been provided to address their concerns conclusively.
"This is not a statement made lightly. It is driven by the need for clarity, accountability, and truth," the family asserted. They remain committed to pursuing these matters through appropriate channels and will not hesitate to take further steps to establish a full and accurate account of the events leading to Toluwalase's death.
University's Response and Public Appeal
In a separate statement, Covenant University described the incident as an unfortunate loss, stating that Toluwalase participated in a football training session, complained of leg pains, and was taken to the medical center after gasping for breath. The university confirmed that he was brought in dead, and despite immediate CPR with an AED, efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. They attributed the death to a prior undisclosed heart condition and denied any negligence or equipment shortages.
The family has appealed to all relevant parties to cooperate fully and prioritize transparency in the interest of justice. They also asked the public to continue keeping them in their thoughts during this difficult time. The statement was signed by Adedamola on behalf of the family, underscoring their collective grief and determination for answers.
This development comes amid ongoing public scrutiny and highlights the need for thorough investigations into student safety and emergency protocols in educational institutions across Nigeria.
