Germany Sets €1,091 Monthly Bank Requirement for Student Visa

The German government has announced that foreign nationals applying for a higher education visa must demonstrate access to at least €1,091 (N1,713,742) per month to cover living expenses for the entire duration of their stay. The updated threshold, effective as of 2026, was confirmed in Germany's official visa application guidance.

According to the German government, applicants can satisfy this requirement in two ways: by opening a blocked bank account pre-loaded with the required monthly amount, or by submitting a declaration of commitment from a sponsor or guarantor who assumes financial responsibility.

How Applicants Can Meet the Financial Requirement

The official statement from Germany's visa application guidance reads: "You can cover your living costs for the entire duration of your stay. You can prove this by opening a blocked bank account with a minimum of €1,091 per month (as of 2026) or by submitting a declaration of commitment."

A blocked bank account is specifically designed for international students, where funds are deposited upfront but can only be withdrawn in monthly instalments after arrival. This mechanism assures immigration authorities that the applicant will not become financially dependent on the German state.

Financial Commitment for Nigerian and African Students

For Nigerian students and other Africans considering Germany, the monthly requirement translates into a substantial financial commitment. A two-year course, for example, would require at least €26,184 to be held or accounted for before visa approval.

Germany remains an attractive destination for African students due to its tuition-free public universities, but the cost of living requirement makes financial preparation a critical step in the application process.

Germany's Visa Waiver List

In a related development, Legit.ng reported that Germany updated its visa requirements and published a list of two African countries whose citizens can enter without a visa: Mauritius and Seychelles, subject to certain conditions.
