A young Nigerian man, Adetomiwa Victor, has shared his inspiring academic journey after missing admission to the University of Ibadan (UI) despite scoring over 70 in the post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (post-UTME). He eventually gained admission to the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID), where he excelled and graduated as valedictorian.
High Scores but No Admission at UI
On his LinkedIn page, Victor recounted how he scored 258 in his second UTME and over 70 in the post-UTME but still did not secure a place at UI. He declined an offer to switch to Anthropology and decided to try again. He chose UNIMAID and studied harder while working as a teacher at a Montessori school, often taking textbooks to work and studying while his students handled their classwork. On his second attempt, he scored 268 and was eventually admitted into Human Anatomy after changing from his initial choice.
Thriving at UNIMAID
Victor shared his experience at UNIMAID, noting that the institution refines students rather than gently molding them. In his first year, he aimed for a GPA that would allow him to switch departments. He started with a 4.36 GPA, but a faulty CBT exam affected one course, limiting his chances. Spending much of his second year pursuing a transfer caused his GPA to drop slightly. By his third year, he accepted his path and committed to extracurricular activities, volunteering, fellowships, and self-development. He also served as assistant class rep while balancing academics and his final-year project. Despite challenges, he graduated as valedictorian with a CGPA of 4.39.
Social Media Reactions
His story triggered positive reactions on social media. Shalom Soji-Oderinde commented, "If excellence was a person! A hearty congratulations! I'm glad you pulled through and the results are evident. Cheers to more!" Elizabeth Musa Kwajaffa said, "Congratulations victor." Grace Felix added, "Wow congratulations."
