MAU Students Protest Hostel Fee Hike from N15,000 to N60,000

Students at Modibbo Adama University Face Financial Crisis as Hostel Fees Quadruple Overnight

Students enrolled at Modibbo Adama University in Yola, Adamawa State, have raised urgent concerns regarding a sudden and dramatic increase in hostel accommodation fees for the upcoming academic session. The accommodation charges have skyrocketed from N15,000 to N60,090, representing a staggering fourfold rise that has left many students in severe financial distress.

Financial and Emotional Strain on Students

Numerous students have reported that this unexpected fee hike has created significant emotional turmoil and financial hardship. According to student testimonies, the university administration has not provided any justification for the increase, nor have they made any visible improvements to the hostel facilities. The number of students assigned to each room remains unchanged, further exacerbating student frustration.

One final-year student, identified only as Gloria, described the profound impact this development has had on her life. "As it stands, I have to look for a loan from friends to pay for the accommodation because I hustle to pay my fees," she explained. "I would like the school to kindly review the amount, as it's affecting us financially, emotionally, psychologically, and physically."

Parental Conflicts and Access Issues

Another student, who requested anonymity, revealed that the fee increase has caused serious tension within her family. "I had issues with my parents because of this increase; they said I was lying and wanted to extort money from them," she shared. "How could my accommodation fee be higher than my school fees? My dad told me to use my upkeep money and complete the hostel fees, because he doesn't have money. It has affected me financially and emotionally."

Compounding the problem, students who have managed to pay the new fee report that they still cannot access their hostel accommodations. "I have paid the 60,000 for the accommodation, and until now, the hostel has not been released to us," one student stated. "One issue I'm having is that we don't know the reason for the increase; the school didn't release any circular to notify us of it, and the hostels are still not renovated."

Students Demand Transparency and Review

The student body is now collectively calling on the university management to provide a clear explanation for the fee adjustment and to reconsider the amount to make it more affordable. Many emphasize that the lack of communication from the administration has left them feeling blindsided and unable to properly focus on their academic responsibilities.

"We need an explanation from the school on why the amount was increased," another student asserted. "We are blindfolded because nothing has changed in the hostel, even when we paid the new amount. The school should update us and review the amount."

Broader Context of University Accommodation Costs

This situation at Modibbo Adama University occurs against a backdrop of rising accommodation costs across Nigerian universities. In a related development, a University of Ibadan medical student recently disclosed that on-campus hostel fees at that institution start at N60,000, while private off-campus accommodations can reach as high as N700,000 depending on amenities and comfort levels.

As of the time of reporting, attempts to obtain an official response from Modibbo Adama University administration regarding the fee increase have been unsuccessful. The university has yet to issue any public statement or circular addressing student concerns about the quadrupled hostel charges.
