NANS Pledges Full Support to NDLEA's Anti-Drug Campaign on University Campuses
The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has formally expressed its unwavering support for the ongoing initiatives led by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to combat substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking throughout Nigeria. This significant commitment was made during a high-level courtesy visit by student leaders to the NDLEA headquarters in Abuja.
Student Leaders Commend NDLEA's Efforts
Led by National President Comrade Sola Oladoja, the NANS delegation commended NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), for his exemplary leadership and the agency's robust operations against drug cartels. Oladoja specifically highlighted the impactful War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) advocacy initiative, which has successfully increased awareness and education on the dangers of drug use across numerous tertiary institutions nationwide.
Oladoja reaffirmed the association's strong backing for both the NDLEA and President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing that this support is rooted in policies that directly benefit young Nigerians. He cited key measures such as the student loan program, the resolution of industrial disputes within tertiary institutions, and various youth empowerment initiatives as foundational to their endorsement.
Marwa Emphasizes Collaboration and Prevention
In his response, Chairman Marwa acknowledged the longstanding relationship he maintains with Nigerian students, recalling their support during his previous public service roles. He expressed heartfelt appreciation for NANS's recognition of the gains achieved under President Tinubu's agenda and their commitment to supporting his re-election in 2027.
"As a critical sector of the Nigerian polity, what you said about your appreciation of the gains of President Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda and your commitment to support his re-election in 2027 gladdens my heart," Marwa stated.
He stressed the urgent need for collaborative efforts to address the pervasive issue of drug use in educational institutions. "We need to work with you on our efforts to rid our campuses of drug abuse because of the consequences to students' health, their aspirations, and even their families, as well as the society at large," Marwa added, underscoring the far-reaching impacts of substance abuse.
Focus on Preventive Measures and Integrity Testing
Marwa also addressed the Federal Government's Drug Integrity Test Policy for students, clarifying that this measure is fundamentally preventive. It aims at early detection of drug use to facilitate timely treatment and rehabilitation, thereby safeguarding students' futures and well-being.
The meeting concluded with both organizations agreeing to strengthen their cooperation and partnership in a concerted effort to curb substance abuse on campuses. This alliance marks a pivotal step towards creating safer, healthier educational environments for Nigerian students, aligning with broader national goals of youth development and public health.
