New City University is set to significantly enhance its media and communication programmes with the establishment of dedicated campus broadcasting stations. The institution's leadership has announced concrete plans to launch both a radio and television station, aiming to provide hands-on experience for students and serve surrounding communities.
Broadcasting for Education and Community
Professor Ralph Afolabi Akinfeleye, the Pro-Chancellor of New City University, made the disclosure during the chancellor's reception and Christmas party held on campus on 23 December 2025. He explained that the university is currently awaiting broadcast approval from the national regulator to commence operations.
Professor Akinfeleye emphasised that the core objective is to strengthen practical training within the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies. He stated that the facilities are being developed specifically to give students direct, real-world experience in broadcasting, replicating a successful model he previously implemented at the University of Lagos (UNILAG).
"Our focus is to do many things that other radio stations are not doing and making sure our students have practical sessions in radio and television broadcasting," Akinfeleye said. He added that the stations will service the university's immediate community in Ayetoro, Lagos, and extend to areas like Sagamu, Abeokuta, and Ijebu Ode.
Building a Top-Tier Media Faculty
Echoing the Pro-Chancellor's vision, the founder and Chancellor of the university, Akin Akingbesote, described the initiative as a strategic move to build one of the best media faculties in Nigeria. He recalled that the university itself was established to address the critical shortage of university spaces for the growing number of admission-seeking students in the country.
In a bid to foster academic excellence, Chancellor Akingbesote announced a groundbreaking scholarship scheme. The university will fully refund the tuition fees of any student who graduates with a first-class degree. Furthermore, accounting students who become chartered accountants before completing their degree will receive additional scholarships.
"These are to booster your morale so that you know what you are here for. So please cooperate very well, read your book. When you read your book, then you've already get a level in life because without education, there's a limitation," Akingbesote stressed to the students.
Entrepreneurship and Future Plans
Beyond broadcasting and scholarships, the Chancellor reaffirmed the institution's commitment to instilling an entrepreneurial spirit in its students. He disclosed that the university plans to kickstart practical business ventures as early as January, including a bakery and a bottled water production unit.
This multi-pronged approach—combining state-of-the-art media training facilities, generous academic incentives, and entrepreneurship—positions New City University as an institution focused on holistic and practical education. The upcoming radio and TV stations stand as a central pillar in this strategy, promising to transform media studies for its students while creating a new voice for community engagement in the region.
