Nigerian Graduate's Persistence in Challenging Exam Grade Leads to Top Honor and Cash Prize

A recent graduate from Nile University in Nigeria has demonstrated the power of perseverance after insisting on the remarking of an examination script, a decision that ultimately propelled him to academic distinction and financial reward.

From Disappointment to Determination

Jameswilliams Chiahukamnanya Gabriel, who shared his story on social media platform X, recounted how his journey began during his 100-level second semester. He received a B grade, approximately 67, in a General Studies course, which left him disheartened given his previous perfect 5.0 GPA in the first semester and strong performance in other challenging subjects.

Initially, Gabriel considered requesting a remark but was advised against it by a university staff member, who deemed it unnecessary to contest a B grade. Despite this discouragement, he let the matter slide at the time, though the experience lingered throughout his academic career.

A Second Chance and Remarkable Outcome

Years later, in his final year, Gabriel faced a similar situation when he earned another B in a course where he believed he had excelled. Determined not to repeat his earlier inaction, he formally applied for a remarking of the exam script.

The first review adjusted his grade to a 70 A, but a second review, ordered by the vice-chancellor after rejecting the initial process due to procedural concerns, further increased his score to an impressive 88 A. This grade improvement raised his Cumulative Grade Point Average from 4.94 to 4.95.

Securing Prestigious Recognition and Reward

As a result of the enhanced CGPA, Gabriel secured the position of Overall Best Graduating Student First Runner-Up at Nile University. This achievement came with an additional cash prize of N250,000, which he might not have received without the grade adjustment.

In his X post, Gabriel detailed the tortuous follow-up process required to ensure the grade was reflected on his transcript, but he emphasized that it was ultimately worth the effort. He noted that the outcome not only earned him features in national newspapers but also inspired numerous students, including one who achieved a 5.0 GPA multiple times by drawing motivation from his story.

This case highlights the importance of advocating for academic fairness and the potential rewards of persistence in the face of institutional hurdles.
