From UI Dropout to First-Class Graduate: Babcock University Success Story

A remarkable academic journey has emerged as a former University of Ibadan master's student, who abandoned his studies just three weeks before examinations due to financial constraints, has graduated with first-class honors from Babcock University. Oluwa Toye's story highlights perseverance and strategic planning in overcoming educational obstacles.

The UI Dropout Decision

Oluwa Toye initially enrolled in a postgraduate program at the University of Ibadan, successfully passing entrance examinations and securing accommodation at Farayola with a roommate. However, as examinations approached within three weeks, Toye faced an insurmountable financial barrier.

"I dropped out of school. Yes! I also became a dropout! I couldn't pay my tuition of about ₦123,000 at the time," Toye revealed in a Facebook post. "Even if I combined everything my schools were paying me, it still wouldn't cover the fees."

At the time, Toye was teaching phonics at multiple schools, but his income proved insufficient for the tuition requirements. This financial reality forced him to abandon his UI studies, cease his teaching positions, and ultimately leave Ibadan when his rental agreement expired.

The Road to Babcock University

After leaving Oyo State, Toye relocated to Uyo where he rebuilt his financial foundation with assistance from friends. Through careful saving and determination, he eventually applied for admission at Babcock University in Ilisan-Remo, Ogun State.

"I knew I was going to return to school. I saved up. This time, I didn't go back to UI rather I chose Babcock University," Toye explained. Despite skepticism from acquaintances who questioned how he would manage the approximately ₦2 million costs, Toye remained committed to his educational goals.

In September 2023, Toye moved from Lagos to Babcock University and completed his studies in July 2025, achieving an exceptional 4.91 grade point average and graduating with first-class honors.

Academic Achievement and Social Response

Toye emphasized that his accomplishment extends beyond merely returning to education. "The testimony here wasn't about even going back but about the GPA," he noted, encouraging others facing challenges: "Yes, life has thrown you lemons but what are you going to do about it?"

The inspiring story has generated significant positive reactions on social media:

  • Horlardunny Heritage commented: "This is so inspiring! Congratulations. Greater success ahead."
  • Prince Tays Dabs expressed surprise: "You dropped out of our class because of tuition fee? I thought you saw a greener pasture... Truly, only the heart knows what a man is going through."
  • Sofela Mercy added: "Man like Peter So happy this turned out well. Congratulations to you Greater feats to come."

Broader Educational Context

This success story emerges within Nigeria's higher education landscape where financial barriers frequently interrupt academic pursuits. The achievement highlights several important aspects of Nigerian higher education:
