University of Ibadan Graduate Triumphs Over Academic Challenges to Secure Second-Class Degree
A recent graduate from the University of Ibadan, Temidayo Oladoke, has publicly celebrated her achievement of earning a Second Class Lower (2:2) degree in Food Technology, despite facing significant academic obstacles early in her university career. From Childhood Dreams to Unexpected Paths
Oladoke revealed that her original aspiration was to become a medical doctor, a dream she held since childhood. However, as she progressed through secondary school, her ambitions shifted towards pharmacy. Unfortunately, a D grade in Mathematics in her West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WAEC) disqualified her from applying to pharmacy or medicine programmes at the University of Ibadan. This setback forced her to pivot to Food Technology, a course she admitted knowing nothing about at the time of application.
Navigating Early Academic Hurdles
Upon starting her studies, Oladoke encountered immediate challenges, particularly with mathematics and physics courses, which she described as her "mortal enemies." These subjects proved difficult, leading to a disappointing first-year performance where she finished with a third-class cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 1.92 out of 4.00. The struggle was so intense that she considered switching to social sciences, but with encouragement from her parents, she decided to stay and confront her fears head-on.
Determination and Gradual Improvement
Refusing to be defined by her initial setbacks, Oladoke committed to putting in extra effort to improve her academic standing. Over the subsequent years, she dedicated herself to her studies, making sacrifices such as forgoing social activities and enduring sleepless nights. Her hard work paid off as she gradually improved her grades, eventually graduating with a CGPA of 2.67 out of 4.00, earning a Second Class Lower degree.
