UI Microbiology Graduate Defies Job Market Doubters, Charts Unique Career Path

Ifeolwa Alagbe, a recent graduate of Microbiology from the University of Ibadan, has shared an inspiring account of her job search journey after repeatedly being told that her chosen field would not lead to decent employment opportunities. In a detailed LinkedIn post dated March 20, 2026, Alagbe recounted how skepticism from others about her academic path only strengthened her resolve to succeed.

Overcoming Negative Perceptions

Throughout her university years, Alagbe faced persistent comments suggesting that Microbiology graduates struggle to find jobs in Nigeria. "Anytime I told anyone my course of study, what would follow is, 'Oh, they don't usually get jobs after they finish studying'," she recalled. Despite this discouragement, she remained focused on her studies, determined to prove the naysayers wrong.

Her interest in the medical applications of Microbiology kept her motivated, even as she acknowledged the challenging job market realities in Nigeria. During her industrial training, she gained valuable practical experience at University College Hospital in Ibadan, working both in a microbiology laboratory and at the hospital's water treatment plant.

Navigating Post-Graduation Challenges

After completing her degree, Alagbe entered the National Youth Service Corps program, where she was unexpectedly posted to a hospital instead of the typical teaching assignment. There, she served as a Health Insurance Officer and medical administrative assistant, gaining crucial healthcare industry experience that sparked her interest in public health.

Following her NYSC service, she confronted the competitive job market head-on, applying for various positions regardless of field. She initially accepted a school administration role but quickly realized this wasn't her desired career path. Determined to enhance her employability, she enrolled in online data analysis courses through YouTube, balancing her studies with full-time work.

Career Evolution and Future Plans

Her persistence paid off when she secured a position as a Scientific Officer in a microbiology laboratory in Lagos. However, this new role disrupted her data analysis studies, forcing her to pause her online learning. After several months in the laboratory position, Alagbe realized she wasn't passionate about the diagnostic aspects of Microbiology.

This realization prompted her to refocus on her original goal of entering public health. "To be a Public health professional, I need to know data analysis," she explained in her LinkedIn post. She has now resumed her data analysis studies with renewed determination, viewing this as the beginning of a new chapter in her professional development.

Alagbe's story has resonated widely on social media, inspiring other graduates facing similar challenges. Her journey demonstrates that perseverance and adaptability can overcome even the most discouraging predictions about career prospects.
