University of Ibadan Student Achieves National Swimming Success
Despite being an undergraduate at the University of Ibadan, a 300-level student has made a significant impact on the national swimming scene, earning seven medals through dedication and perseverance. Eniola, who studies human kinetics, started swimming at the age of 19 and has since become a prominent athlete, sharing her inspiring journey from campus competitions to national trials.
From Beginner to Champion: Eniola's Swimming Evolution
Eniola began her swimming journey later than many athletes, first entering a pool at 19, having only experienced water in her parents' drum at home. Her life revolved around school, church, and home, with swimming initially absent from her routine. However, upon gaining admission to the University of Ibadan, she enrolled in a human kinetics program and took a swimming course seriously, sparking a newfound passion for the sport.
She joined the UI swimming team in 2023, marking the start of her competitive career. In her first event, the inter-faculty games, she won a silver medal, her inaugural swimming award. This success fueled her ambition, leading to multiple medals in intra-school competitions and setting the stage for national recognition.
National Trials and Setbacks on the Path to Glory
Eniola's rise included participation in the FISU trials in 2025, where she traveled from Ibadan to Jos with top athletes from her university. At these national trials, she secured four medals: one gold, two silvers, and one bronze, elevating her to a four-time national medalist by April 2025. Despite this achievement, she faced challenges, including an injury during an inter-varsity gala at Obafemi Awolowo University that benched her from a race.
Her aspirations to represent Nigeria at the World FISU Games in Germany were dashed when she did not receive an invitation after being nominated, highlighting the unpredictable nature of competitive sports. Nonetheless, her resilience has kept her focused on future opportunities.
