University of Abuja Senate Approves Expulsion of 28 Students for Serious Offences
The Senate of the University of Abuja has taken a firm disciplinary stance by approving the expulsion of twenty-eight students from the institution. This decisive action follows comprehensive investigations into multiple serious offences that threaten academic integrity and campus safety.
Comprehensive Disciplinary Measures Implemented
During the university's 191st Regular Senate Meeting, members carefully considered the detailed report submitted by the Student Disciplinary Committee before reaching their verdict. The acting Director of Information and University Relations, Dr. Habib Yakoob, officially announced this development in a statement released on Sunday, February 22, 2026.
The expelled students were found guilty of numerous violations including active participation in cult-related activities, various forms of examination malpractice, possession and use of prohibited hard drugs, and making credible threats to life. Additional charges included physical assault, criminal conspiracy, burglary, theft, and falsification of academic credentials.
Additional Sanctions and Exonerations
The Senate's disciplinary actions extended beyond the expulsions. In a related decision, the university approved the withdrawal of academic certificates previously issued to fifteen former students who repeatedly ignored invitations from the disciplinary committee. This measure underscores the institution's commitment to holding all students accountable for their actions, regardless of their current status.
Meanwhile, the disciplinary process resulted in the exoneration of nine students following thorough investigations that cleared them of alleged misconduct. Additionally, thirty-three other students received formal warnings for various infractions including hostel racketeering, conspiracy, and physical altercations on campus.
University Leadership Emphasizes Zero Tolerance Policy
Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi, the Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Senate, emphasized that the university maintains an uncompromising position regarding standards of conduct. "The academic integrity of our institution is absolutely sacrosanct," Fawehinmi declared. "We are determined that anyone who violates our fundamental principles will face appropriate sanctions without exception."
The Vice-Chancellor clarified that while enforcement remains crucial, the university's ultimate objective extends beyond punishment. "Our goal transcends mere discipline enforcement; we aim to guide our students toward becoming responsible citizens who achieve academic excellence," he explained.
Commitment to Safe Learning Environment
Fawehinmi reaffirmed the institution's dedication to maintaining a secure and conducive atmosphere for both students and staff. "We will continue upholding discipline and enforcing our regulations without compromise," he stated. "Simultaneously, we are enhancing student engagement initiatives, counseling services, and orientation programs to promote responsible behavior and prevent future violations."
This comprehensive disciplinary action represents part of the university management's intensified campaign against indiscipline. The crackdown responds to growing national concerns about cultism, examination fraud, and other criminal activities increasingly reported within Nigeria's tertiary education institutions.
