The University of Jos (UNIJOS) has officially confirmed the tragic loss of two students and injuries to three others during the recent violent attacks in the Anguwan Kububa community, located within the Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State. This distressing announcement was made by the university's Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, during a press briefing held on Thursday, April 9, 2026, where he addressed the profound impact of the incident on the institution.
Details of the Victims and Incident
Prof. Ishaya disclosed that a total of five members from the university community were affected by the attacks, comprising four students and one staff member. The deceased students have been identified as Abel Joro Gershon, a 300-level Building student, and Adeyomo Oluwafemi Temitope, a 500-level Quantity Surveying student.
Gershon was shot in the stomach during the Angwan Rukuba attack and succumbed to his injuries on April 5 at the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH). Temitope was fatally shot on April 1 outside the campus along Bauchi Road. The three injured victims are currently receiving medical treatment in hospital, with the university management closely monitoring their recovery.

On behalf of the entire university community, Prof. Ishaya extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased students and the residents of Angwan Rukuba, where reports indicate that unknown gunmen killed more than 30 people. He emphasized that normal academic activities have resumed across all university campuses as of Tuesday, following a brief disruption.
The Vice-Chancellor highlighted that security measures have been significantly strengthened in the wake of the attacks. Prof. Ishaya clarified that the university was never officially shut down, and no directives were issued for the evacuation of staff or students. To accommodate students who traveled during the Easter break, the management has aligned the resumption of examinations with the end of the holiday period. Exams are scheduled to continue on Monday, April 13, allowing for a safe return of all students.
He also addressed concerns regarding transportation arrangements, noting that while students were advised to use designated transport options for the Easter break, the uncoordinated arrival of vehicles from various state governments and organizations inadvertently created unnecessary panic among the community.
