From One Year to Five: A Timeline of Unexpected Delays
In her candid LinkedIn post, Esther outlined a chronological breakdown of her extended academic pursuit. She gained admission into the program in 2021, only to encounter a nationwide academic staff strike in 2022, which halted all academic activities for that entire year. The actual coursework commenced in 2023, with the first semester stretching across the full year. The second semester followed in 2024, where Esther and her classmates faced the unusual circumstance of having to plead with faculty to administer their examinations.
"We literally had to beg to write our exams," Esther recounted, describing it as the first time in her life she witnessed students in such a position. The year 2025 was dedicated to her thesis defense, which required the cohort to send formal appeals to professors and even the university's Vice-Chancellor to secure the opportunity to present their research. Finally, in 2026, she received the long-awaited notification for her convocation ceremony.
Choosing UNILAG Over University of Ibadan
Esther revealed that her father had initially expected her to pursue her master's degree at the prestigious University of Ibadan. However, during her research, she discovered that UNILAG offered a master's program advertised as a one-year course. This shorter duration was a key factor in her decision to enroll at her alma mater.
"Their MSc program was just one year, and that sounded fascinating so I went for it," she explained. This expectation was quickly upended by the realities she faced upon joining the department, where she met senior students from previous intakes who were still completing their degrees, signaling potential delays ahead.
Celebration and Reactions to Her Academic Perseverance
