UNILAG Inaugurates Geosciences Centre of Excellence to Strengthen Industry Partnerships
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has officially unveiled its Geosciences Centre of Excellence, a landmark initiative designed to address the gap between academic theory and real-world practice. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Folasade Ogunsola highlighted the centre as a pivotal driver for enhancing collaboration between the university and industry stakeholders.
Funding and Development of the Centre
This state-of-the-art facility is the result of a collaborative funding effort involving the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPC), Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited (SNEPCo), and the Nigeria Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB). The project, which began in 2010, has spanned the tenures of four vice-chancellors, including Prof. Babatunde Sofoluwe, Prof. Rahaman Bello, and Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, each contributing to its conceptual refinement and alignment with institutional goals.
Prof. Ogunsola emphasized the university's commitment to building on legacy projects, stating, "At UNILAG, we don’t give up or abandon legacies. We build on the works of previous managements. Each vice-chancellor since the 10th has carried the vision forward, so you can rest assured that your investment is safe with us."
Facilities and Educational Impact
The centre features three suspended floors equipped with a range of modern amenities, including:
- Reception area and offices
- Workshops and laboratories
- Lecture theatre and simulation laboratory
- Library and museum
- Sit-out and convenience facilities
It aims to serve as a hub for interdisciplinary research, integrating fields such as Geosciences, engineering, computer science, physics, and environmental sciences. The facility will provide hands-on learning opportunities with advanced teaching technology, preparing students for careers in the energy sector through specialized studies in reservoir modelling, seismic interpretation, and core analysis.
Sustainability and Industry Support
A comprehensive sustainability framework has been established to ensure the centre's long-term viability. This includes:
- Long-term institutional funding commitments
- Strategic industry partnerships
- Periodic technology upgrades
- Structured maintenance provisions
Industry leaders expressed strong support for the initiative. Ronald Adams, Managing Director of SNEPCo, noted that the centre reflects his company's dedication to investing in Nigerian talent and will function as a national hub for geoscience learning and research. Felix Ogbe, Executive Secretary of NCDMB, represented by Abayomi Bamidele, reiterated the board's focus on local content development through human capital investment, urging that the facility be maintained to global standards with measurable outcomes in training and research.
Bayo Ojulari, Group Managing Director of NNPC Limited, represented by Olanrewaju Igandan, encouraged students to leverage the centre's resources for academic and professional advancement. This launch marks a significant step in bridging the gap between academia and industry, fostering innovation and capacity building in Nigeria's educational and energy sectors.
