The University of Lagos (UNILAG) is set to celebrate a remarkable cohort of high-achieving students at its upcoming 56th convocation ceremonies. The institution has announced that a total of 617 undergraduate students will be awarded First Class honours, a significant achievement highlighting academic excellence.
A Perfect Score Leads the Pack
Topping the distinguished list is Umeozor Benedict, a graduate from the Department of Business Administration in the Faculty of Management Sciences. Benedict has achieved the extraordinary feat of finishing his degree with a perfect Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 5.0, earning him the title of the university's overall best graduating student. His accomplishment sets a towering benchmark for academic performance at the prestigious Akoka-based institution.
Comprehensive Graduation Statistics Revealed
The Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, disclosed these details during a press conference held on Wednesday, January 14, 2026. She provided a full statistical breakdown for the 10,584 undergraduate students who will be graduating. The 617 First Class graduates constitute 5.8 per cent of the total undergraduate graduating population.
Professor Ogunsola outlined the complete distribution of honours:
- First Class: 617 students
- Distinction: 92 students
- Second Class Upper Division: 4,543 students
- Second Class Lower Division: 3,910 students
- Third Class: 1,023 students
- Pass: 69 students
- Unclassified: 330 students
For postgraduate studies, the Vice-Chancellor stated that 502 students will graduate with Distinction, while another 5,420 will receive Pass degrees.
Convocation Schedule and Venues
The 56th convocation ceremonies of the University of Lagos are scheduled to take place over three days, from January 20 to January 22, 2026. The events will be held at various venues within the university's main campus in Akoka, Lagos State. This period will be dedicated to honouring the hard work, dedication, and intellectual rigour demonstrated by the graduating students across all faculties and disciplines.
