UNIMED Vice Chancellor Calls for Women to Embrace Mentorship as Key to Leadership Success

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Prof. Ebunoluwa Adejuyigbe, has issued a compelling appeal for women to actively embrace mentorship, resilience, and authenticity as essential pathways for personal development and leadership advancement. In a keynote address delivered at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), she emphasized the critical need for women to transform their individual experiences into shared value, fostering collective growth.

Turning Personal Journeys into Collective Empowerment

Speaking at the 2026 International Women’s Day celebration organized by the Centre for Gender Studies and Development, Prof. Adejuyigbe highlighted that being a trailblazer in male-dominated fields involves not only personal achievement but also creating opportunities for others. She stressed that mentorship serves as a vital tool in this process, enabling women to navigate challenges and ascend to leadership roles more effectively.

A Storytelling Approach to Mentorship

Under the theme "Give to Gain: A Storytelling Approach in Mentorship," Prof. Adejuyigbe shared her own inspiring narrative at the Nelson Mandela Hall. She recounted her journey from modest beginnings in Akoko, located in the northern part of Ondo State, to significant accomplishments in academia and leadership. Her progression from a junior academic to a professor, including her tenure as the first female dean and her current role as vice-chancellor, was presented as a powerful lesson in perseverance and strategic growth.

Institutional Support and Collective Benefits

Dr. Memunat Olayemi Mahmud, the director of the Centre for Gender Studies and Development, elaborated on the theme by explaining that giving involves sharing one's story, wisdom, and lessons, while gaining entails personal growth and inheriting insights without starting from scratch. She urged participants to absorb and apply such success stories, noting that when a woman mentors another, both parties experience mutual benefits and enhanced development.

Commitment to Equity and Inclusion

Prof. Olugbenga Ige, the Vice Chancellor of AAUA, underscored the institution's dedication to equity and inclusion through this event. He pointed out that failing to invest in the full potential of all members ultimately disadvantages the institution itself. Prof. Ige highlighted AAUA's progress, noting a noticeable increase in the number of women occupying professional and leadership positions, which reflects a broader commitment to gender equality and empowerment.

This gathering served as a shared space for reflection, growth, and empowerment, reinforcing the importance of mentorship in bridging gaps and fostering leadership among women in academic and professional spheres.
