Margaret Lawrence University Implements Smartphone Ban to Curb Distractions

In a decisive move to enhance academic concentration, Margaret Lawrence University has officially prohibited students from using smartphones on its campus premises. The institution has issued a stern warning that first-time offenders could face a two-week suspension, with penalties escalating for repeated violations.

Rationale Behind the Ban

The university administration explained that this measure was introduced to help students focus more intently on their academic work. Smartphones, often identified as a major source of distraction during learning activities, are seen as impediments to effective study and classroom engagement.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ernest Izevbigie announced this policy during the third matriculation ceremony for the 2025/2026 academic session, held in Abuja. He emphasized that the decision aims to minimize disruptions, stating, "Using smartphones can be a distraction, and they all know that. Their parents know that. In fact, that is one of our selling points. They are not allowed to use smartphones so they can communicate."

Matriculation and University Growth

The hybrid event saw over 272 students matriculate, with physical proceedings at the Abuja main campus and virtual participation from the Delta State campus. This reflects the university's expanding reach and adaptability in educational delivery.

During the ceremony, Founder and Pro-Chancellor Paul Odili urged students to maintain discipline and dedication to their studies. He reminded them that their primary goal at the institution is to acquire knowledge, develop critical thinking skills, and build character essential for future career success. Odili highlighted that a strong commitment to academics would prepare them to become responsible leaders and professionals.

Recognition of Institutional Achievements

Former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, commended Margaret Lawrence University for its rapid progress, particularly noting the establishment of a teaching hospital within three years of its founding. This achievement underscores the institution's commitment to comprehensive educational and healthcare development.

The smartphone ban is part of a broader strategy to foster a conducive learning environment, aligning with the university's mission to prioritize academic excellence and student discipline.
