Nigerian Wig Maker Helen Williams Sets World Record with 15.37m Tall Wig
Nigerian sets world record for tallest wig at 15.37m

In a stunning display of creativity and engineering, a Nigerian entrepreneur has cemented her place in global history. Helen Williams, a professional wig maker from Nigeria, has officially set a new Guinness World Record for creating the tallest wig ever documented.

A Monumental Achievement in Hair Art

The record-breaking creation stands at a staggering 15.37 metres (over 50 feet) tall, a height that surpasses that of a standard three-storey building. The Guinness World Records organization confirmed the measurement, awarding Williams her third major title in the field of wig making. This latest feat adds to an already impressive portfolio that includes records for the world's longest handmade wig and the widest wig.

Williams's journey to this record was far from straightforward. She revealed that an initial test of the structure failed, forcing her back to the drawing board. "Making the wig stand was going to be very difficult but I went back and started designing again," she told Guinness World Records. After months of redesign and problem-solving, her official attempt was a success.

The Technical Marvel Behind the Record

Constructing the tallest wig presented unique challenges that went beyond traditional wig-making skills. Williams described it as her most difficult project to date, highlighting the critical importance of the internal framework. "You can know how to make a wig and have 10 or 20 years of experience, but if the internal structure doesn't hold you won't get the record," she explained.

The colossal piece required immense resources:

  • 250 bundles of string hair.
  • Over ₦3 million in production costs (approx. $2,066).
  • Two weeks of dedicated construction time.

Williams contrasted this project with her record for the longest wig (351.28 metres), noting that while length was easier from a wig-maker's perspective, achieving height demanded careful engineering and structural innovation.

A Legacy of Breaking Boundaries

Helen Williams is no stranger to the Guinness World Records stage. Prior to this achievement, she held titles for:

  • The world's longest handmade wig (351.28 metres).
  • The world's widest wig (3.65 metres).
  • Most hair clips in a wig in 30 seconds (94 clips).
  • Most hair clips on the head in 30 seconds (97 clips).

For Williams, each record is a profound personal victory. "Each record represents a battle I fought against doubt, fear and limits," she reflected. "The records remind me that if you refuse to give up, anything is possible." She likened the process of setting a record to climbing a mountain—arduous but ultimately rewarding.

With her ambition still burning brightly, Williams has no plans to stop. "I don't think I'll ever stop breaking records," she declared, signaling her intent to continue pushing the envelope. "There are more records to break, more boundaries to push and more dreams to achieve." Her story stands as a powerful testament to Nigerian ingenuity, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of excellence on the world stage.
