Grammys 2027: Major Rule Changes Including New Categories and Voting Updates
Grammys 2027: New Categories, Voting Changes Announced

The Recording Academy has announced several significant changes ahead of the 2027 Grammy Awards, introducing new categories, updated voting rules, and expanded eligibility for Best New Artist. These updates aim to reflect the evolving music industry and provide greater recognition for a broader range of artists.

Best New Artist Eligibility Expanded

One of the most notable changes is the expansion of Best New Artist eligibility. Previously, artists could be submitted for consideration a maximum of three times. That limit has now been raised to four. This change allows artists who build their careers steadily over several years more opportunities to qualify, especially those who may have been locked out under the old rules. Billboard noted that potential frontrunners like Ella Langley and Megan Moroney might not have been eligible under the previous limit.

Five New Categories Added

The Grammys are adding five new categories to reflect current music trends:

  • Best Asian Pop Music Performance – Covers K-pop, J-pop, C-pop, and other Asian pop formats performed in Asian languages.
  • Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance – Splits the previous R&B performance category into solo and collaborative categories.
  • Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance – Recognizes classic, old-school pop music.
  • Best Traditional Folk Album – Separates heritage folk recordings from contemporary folk; the existing Best Folk Album becomes Best Contemporary Folk Album.
  • Best Latin Song – Honors songwriters of newly written Spanish-language Latin songs.

New Voting Option: Ballot Plus

A new opt-in voting option called Ballot Plus allows Recording Academy members with expertise across multiple genres to vote in up to 15 categories, up from the standard 10. Members must submit verified professional credits to qualify. Those who do not opt in remain on the existing ballot structure.

Other Notable Changes

Album eligibility now requires only 66 percent new recordings, down from 75 percent, allowing more projects to qualify. Additionally, songwriters and composers will now receive Grammy statuettes when their albums win genre categories, placing them on equal footing with producers and engineers.

These changes are set to take effect for the 69th Grammy Awards, scheduled for February 7, 2027. The updates are designed to make the awards more inclusive and reflective of the current music landscape.
