The Chief Executive Officer of New Horizons Technologies, Tim Akano, has achieved a remarkable double recognition, receiving distinguished alumni awards from two pivotal institutions in his educational journey.
Prestigious Recognition from Alma Maters
In November 2025, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and Baptist Day School, Oluponna, each conferred separate awards on Akano. These honours celebrate his lifelong dedication to advancing education, fostering mentorship, driving technology and innovation, and contributing significantly to community development across Nigeria.
This dual accolade marks a significant milestone, underscoring Akano's profound commitment to human capital development and creating lasting social impact beyond the corporate sphere.
Impact at Obafemi Awolowo University
Akano, who graduated from OAU in 1987, was specifically recognised by the university for his substantial influence in the fields of entrepreneurship, technology, and innovation. His sustained mentorship of students was a key factor in the award.
His tangible contributions include awarding 1,000 scholarships valued at N60 million to OAU students in 2023 to study artificial intelligence (AI). Furthermore, he demonstrates ongoing commitment through a structured mentorship initiative, where he has consistently adopted five students yearly from the Department of International Relations for guidance and support.
Historic Honour at Baptist Day School, Oluponna
The award from Baptist Day School, Oluponna, carries historic weight. Akano was decorated as the school's first distinguished alumnus since its establishment in the 1930s.
This recognition is backed by concrete community projects. During a recent visit, Akano inspected infrastructure developments financed by the Tim Akano Foundation three years prior. The critical projects include:
- The construction of a borehole for reliable water supply.
- Modern toilet facilities for both teachers and pupils.
- The erection of a perimeter fence and gate around the school premises.
This security infrastructure has proven vital, effectively ending incessant disturbances by herdsmen. Previously, reckless grazing within the school grounds polluted the environment with cow waste and exposed the children to significant security risks. The new fence has created a safer, more conducive learning environment.
These dual awards from OAU and Baptist Day School collectively highlight Tim Akano's model of leveraging professional success for broad educational empowerment and community transformation.
