Popular Nigerian comedian Bovi has ignited fresh debate after suggesting that marriages should operate on a five-year renewable contract basis. Speaking on the Dear Ife Series podcast, he argued that such a system would encourage partners to put more effort into their relationships instead of becoming complacent.
According to Bovi, no one should feel trapped in an unhappy marriage. He stated that if a husband is no longer fulfilled after five years, he should be free to end the relationship without unnecessary complications. He added, 'When there's just one year left on the contract, you'll see a lot of women adjusting their character.'
Mixed Reactions from Social Media Users
The comment has drawn strong reactions online. User @officialJoyO called the statement 'deceptive and evil,' saying that if a contract marriage is desired, it should be stated from the start rather than pretending to seek forever love. @Rtee__73 noted that clauses about cheating and losing half of one's property would make both parties adjust their behavior, questioning the purpose of marriage altogether.
@Nigeriangod_ criticized Bovi for focusing only on men's happiness, emphasizing that women's happiness is equally important and that women should also be free to leave if unhappy. @badnis178092 pointed out that men can also be performers in relationships when the clock is ticking, not just women.
Bovi's Previous Controversial Comments
This is not the first time Bovi has stirred controversy with his views on relationships and social issues. Recently, he also commented on the Ibom Air incident involving a female passenger who allegedly assaulted a flight attendant. He suggested that the outburst could be due to a mental health disorder and called for psychological evaluation, though he later deleted the post, admitting he spoke from a biased perspective without full details.
The comedian's latest remarks have reignited conversations about commitment, divorce, and what truly sustains relationships in modern society. While some see his proposal as practical and honest, others view it as undermining the sanctity of marriage.
