Isha Sesay on Single Motherhood Through IVF and Leaving CNN

Former CNN anchor Isha Sesay has opened up about her decision to embrace single motherhood through in vitro fertilization (IVF) and her departure from the network. In a candid interview, the British-Sierra Leonean journalist shared the personal and professional reasons behind these life-changing choices.

Choosing Single Motherhood

Sesay, 48, revealed that she had always wanted to be a mother but did not want to wait for a partner. She decided to pursue IVF to have a child on her own terms. “I was like, ‘I don’t want to wait for a man to have a child,’” she said. “I wanted to be a mother, and I felt that time was ticking.”

The former journalist underwent IVF treatment and successfully gave birth to a son, whom she named Nnamdi. She described the experience as empowering but also challenging, noting that single motherhood requires immense strength and support.

Leaving CNN

Sesay also discussed her departure from CNN in 2018 after 12 years with the network. She explained that she felt it was time to move on and pursue other opportunities, including writing and advocacy. “I had done everything I could at CNN,” she said. “I wanted to tell stories in a different way, and I wanted to have more control over my narrative.”

Since leaving CNN, Sesay has focused on her writing career and activism. She authored a book titled “Beneath the Tamarind Tree: A Story of Courage, Resilience, and the Chibok Schoolgirls,” which details the kidnapping of 276 schoolgirls by Boko Haram in Nigeria. She also founded the Isha Sesay Foundation, which supports girls’ education in Sierra Leone.

Balancing Career and Motherhood

Balancing her career and motherhood has been a significant adjustment. Sesay acknowledged that she often feels guilty about not spending enough time with her son, but she is determined to set an example for him. “I want him to see that his mother is strong, independent, and passionate about making a difference,” she said.

She also emphasized the importance of having a strong support system, including her mother, who helps care for Nnamdi. “It takes a village, and I am grateful for mine,” she added.

Advice to Other Women

Sesay encouraged other women considering single motherhood to trust their instincts and not be afraid to go against societal norms. “There is no one-size-fits-all approach to life,” she said. “You have to do what feels right for you.”

She also advised women to plan financially and emotionally for the journey. “It is not easy, but it is incredibly rewarding,” she concluded.
