Reality television star Kourtney Kardashian Barker has made a surprising confession about her entry into motherhood, revealing she felt utterly lost when she had her first child at the age of 30.
From Instinct to Intentional Parenting
During the most recent episode of the popular series The Kardashians, the 46-year-old mother of four opened up about her experience welcoming her son, Mason, with former partner Scott Disick in 2009. Kourtney admitted that she approached motherhood without any formal preparation.
"Nobody told me what to do. I didn't read any books," she stated frankly. Instead, she relied completely on her natural instincts, which she says guided her directly toward an attachment parenting philosophy. It was only when she was expecting her second child, daughter Penelope, that she became more deliberate, finally reading a book on attachment parenting before the baby arrived.
Clashing Parenting Views with Scott Disick
The Poosh founder also reflected on her work life during that first pregnancy, noting she continued working simply because "she didn't realise not working was even an option." She contrasted that with her present situation, saying, "Now I have the choice. And I'm grateful I can choose what I connect to."
These revelations came after she hosted a parenting seminar with author Erica Komisar at her luxurious $8.5 million home in The Estates at the Oaks. Kourtney's parenting journey has been complicated by her ongoing dynamic with Scott Disick. The couple, who split in 2015 after his infidelity with stylist Chloé Bartoli, share three children: Mason (15), Penelope (13), and Reign (10).
Their co-parenting relationship has been marked by public disagreements, particularly over education. Kourtney once questioned the entire school system on her sister Khloé's podcast, asking "Why do kids even go to school?" and labelling it "dated." Scott reportedly found these comments "irresponsible" and strongly disagreed, insisting school is essential and that he would "never allow his kids to skip it." This disagreement is ironic given that Scott dropped out of school as a teenager, while Kourtney holds a degree in Theatre Arts from the University of Arizona.
New Chapter with Travis Barker
Scott recently shared on the show that he almost relocated to New York to be nearer to his girlfriend but changed his plans after his son Mason expressed that he couldn't leave. "I was getting prepared," Scott said. "But there's no way I could actually do it."
Kourtney has since moved on and is now married to Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker. The couple welcomed their son, Rocky, two years ago. Travis also has three older children from his previous marriage to Shanna Moakler. Long before Keeping Up With the Kardashians catapulted her family to global fame, Kourtney was actually the first Kardashian to appear on reality TV, starring in E!'s Filthy Rich: Cattle Drive back in 2005.
