Megan Thee Stallion Hospitalized After Falling Ill During Broadway Performance
Grammy-winning rapper Megan Thee Stallion faced a serious health scare on Tuesday night when she was rushed to a New York City hospital after falling ill during her performance in Broadway's Moulin Rouge! The Musical. The incident occurred less than two weeks into what was supposed to be an eight-week theatrical debut, forcing an abrupt halt to the show at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre.
Performance Halted Abruptly
During Tuesday night's production, Megan began feeling very ill and was promptly transported to a local hospital for evaluation. Her representative confirmed the situation in a statement, saying, "We will share additional updates as more information becomes available." Audience members described a performance that started normally before coming to a sudden stop.
Loren LoRosa, a producer for The Breakfast Club who was in attendance, shared details on social media platform X, noting that the show was stopped mid-performance and the audience was instructed to remain seated. An understudy stepped in to complete the remainder of the performance, taking over Megan's role as Harold Zidler with strong audience support.
Concern from Close Associates
The seriousness of the situation was quickly confirmed by those close to the rapper. Megan's hairstylist and close friend Kellon Deryck posted on X, "Everyone say a prayer for Megan, we are all at the hospital." This public expression of concern highlighted the gravity of the situation as medical professionals worked to assess her condition.
Broadway Debut Cut Short
Megan made her Broadway debut on March 24th, stepping into the role of Harold Zidler, the eccentric, larger-than-life master of ceremonies at the Moulin Rouge nightclub. She became the first female performer to play this role, joining a distinguished list of previous celebrity Zidlers that includes Boy George, Wayne Brady, Tituss Burgess, and Bob the Drag Queen. The role was originally created by Tony Award winner Danny Burstein.
During her opening week, Megan had incorporated her own hits into the show, performing 'Body', 'WAP', and 'Savage' alongside the production's existing repertoire. This creative blend had drawn strong reviews for her stage presence and willingness to push into new artistic territory. She had previously described joining the production as an honor, stating, "Broadway demands a different level of discipline, preparation and storytelling, but I'm up for the challenge."
Future of Broadway Run Uncertain
Moulin Rouge! The Musical, which has run on Broadway for seven years, is scheduled to close on July 26th after 2,265 regular performances, making it the 36th longest-running show in Broadway history. Megan's run was originally scheduled to end on May 17th, but whether she will be able to return to the production remains unclear at this time.
No specific cause for the illness has been disclosed by medical professionals or representatives. Updates are expected as her condition continues to be assessed by healthcare providers. The entertainment community and fans worldwide are awaiting further information about the rapper's health status and recovery prospects.
