Two years after the tragic passing of singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, his father has publicly explained the reason behind the continued delay in giving his son a final resting place. Joseph Aloba has firmly stated that the burial is contingent on the conclusion of a court-ordered DNA test for his grandson, Liam.
Burial Hinges on Paternity Test Outcome
In a video shared on his TikTok page on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, Joseph Aloba addressed the public directly from what appeared to be a court premises. He emphasized that the resolution of the DNA case is the primary obstacle to laying his son to rest. "Today is DNA court case, so we are here now, my lawyer is here," Aloba stated. "I am telling the whole world that this is the most important thing, and this is exactly what is delaying the burial of Mohbad. After DNA is done, we can move to burial."
The late singer, a former signee of Marlian Music, died under controversial circumstances in September 2023. He was initially buried quickly on September 13, 2023, just a day after his death. However, his body was later exhumed on September 21, 2023, as part of an official investigation into the cause of his death. Since the exhumation for autopsy, Mohbad's remains have been held in a morgue.
Ongoing Family Dispute and Legal Proceedings
The burial delay is deeply entangled in an ongoing legal and personal dispute between Mohbad's father and the singer's widow, Omowunmi Aloba. Joseph Aloba has been insistent that a DNA test to confirm the paternity of his grandson, Liam, is a non-negotiable prerequisite. Although a court had previously granted permission for a proper burial, the family has been unable to reach a consensus, leading to the prolonged stalemate.
This latest video statement comes amid a series of public exchanges between Aloba and his daughter-in-law. In previous statements, he has also claimed that Omowunmi was never legally married to his son, further complicating the familial tensions surrounding the estate and the care of the child.
Public Reaction to the Announcement
The announcement by Mohbad's father has sparked a fresh wave of reactions from Nigerians online, with many expressing a mix of frustration, sympathy, and criticism. Comments compiled from social media highlight the public's weariness over the prolonged issue.
One user, latileewa, simply remarked, "Just imagine since 2023," capturing the sentiment of the drawn-out timeline. Another, snazziemusic, commented cynically, "To rest in peace in Nigeria is by serious connection o."
Some comments defended Joseph Aloba's stance. User emmanuel63488 predicted, "Watch them come for this man, for doing what is right." Meanwhile, official__mrjay questioned the duration of the DNA process, asking, "Clear conscience fears no accusation….why taking years for just DNA?"
Other reactions were more critical of the father's actions. User kilosbona insinuated financial motives, writing, "Account don red, burial contribute and donations go still drop... Fresh guy." A comment in Yoruba from glcb2021 offered a cultural perspective, stating, "There's no good father that would delay his young son's burial like this man. In Yorùbá culture, oku ọfọ ni ikú mohbad jẹ. Wọn ma tete sin iru òkú bayi nile Yorùbá." This translates to a belief that such a death requires prompt burial.
Prior to this burial-related video, Joseph Aloba had also drawn attention for a stylish appearance in a black suit, where he was seen singing a Yoruba song. This contrasted sharply with the solemn nature of the ongoing legal battle, showing glimpses of his life amidst the controversy.
As the DNA court case continues, the nation watches, waiting for a resolution that will finally allow the music star to be buried and for his family to find a path toward closure.
