Polygamy Does More Harm Than Good, Says Rita Edochie

Rita Edochie Blames Polygamy for Mr Ibu's Family Crisis

Nollywood actress Rita Edochie has strongly condemned polygamy, stating that it has caused more harm than good, as the family of late actor Mr Ibu battles over his properties. In a passionate Instagram post, Edochie argued that the ongoing feud highlights the destructive nature of polygamous family structures.

The Property Dispute That Sparked the Outcry

The controversy erupted after a public clash between Mr Ibu's widow, Stella Maris, and his other children—including those from previous relationships and out-of-wedlock births during his marriage. Edochie used this as a case study to illustrate her long-standing opposition to polygamy.

Edochie's Strong Words Against Polygamy

Writing on her Instagram page, Edochie declared: 'I DO NOT WANT TO BE NUMBERED... POLYGAMY HAS DONE MORE HARM THAN GOOD, NOT JUST IN NIGERIA BUT IN AFRICA AS A WHOLE. WE MUST CALL A SPADE A SPADE. LATE MR IBU DID NOT DO WELL AT ALL!' She further stated that no amount of sugarcoating can change the fact that polygamy has jeopardized the peace, unity, and harmony of countless families.

Everyday Evidence of Polygamy's Failures

Edochie noted that she keeps seeing more reasons to detest polygamy, as life repeatedly presents evidence that where polygamy exists, peace is constantly under threat. She listed the familiar consequences: 'RIVALRY, JEALOUSY, UNHEALTHY COMPETITION, BITTERNESS, DIVIDED LOYALTIES, INHERITANCE DISPUTES, AND PROLONGED FAMILY CONFLICTS.'

A Warning to Others

The actress emphasized that the painful aspect emerges when the proud polygamist passes away. She urged those currently in polygamous homes or planning to build one to take the Mr Ibu situation as a serious warning. 'IF CARE IS NOT TAKEN, TODAY'S CRISIS IN ANOTHER MAN'S FAMILY CAN EASILY BECOME TOMORROW'S REALITY IN YOURS,' she wrote.

Marriage: A Union of Two, Not Many

Edochie argued that marriage was designed to be a union built on love, commitment, trust, sacrifice, and mutual understanding between one man and one wife. She pointed out that even monogamy is challenging enough to sustain, making polygamy even more difficult. 'IF MAINTAINING PEACE BETWEEN TWO PEOPLE REQUIRES PATIENCE, FORGIVENESS, AND CONSTANT EFFORT, HOW MUCH MORE DIFFICULT DOES IT BECOME WHEN MULTIPLE SPOUSES ARE INVOLVED?' she concluded.
