Social Media Erupts Over Marriage of OPM Pastor's Autistic Son to Mother of Three
A wave of controversy has swept through social media following the wedding of Aboy, the autistic adopted son of Apostle Chibuzor Gift Chinyere, the General Overseer of Omega Power Ministries (OPM). The union, which involved the bride revealing after the ceremony that she is a mother of three with a late partner, has ignited heated discussions and mixed reactions among netizens.
Woman Voices Concern Over Marriage Arrangement
Esther Chisom Amadi took to Facebook to express her bafflement over the marriage, highlighting one aspect she failed to understand. In her post, she detailed the circumstances surrounding the union, noting that Aboy is autistic, non-verbal, deaf, and requires assistance with daily activities like bathing and feeding. She mentioned that Apostle Chibuzor had offered monetary gifts, a house, and other incentives to any woman willing to marry Aboy, leading to the recent wedding.
Amadi stated, "At first, I thought it was AI oh. So few days ago I started seeing posts where OPM general overseer was talking about finding a wife for Aboy Chibuzor. Aboy is one of his adopted sons and he's autistic. He doesn't talk, hear, he can't bath himself or feed by himself. He is not even aware of his environment." She added, "Today Aboy and the woman don marry ooh and many people are saying the woman agree because of money, though, that can not be totally ruled out but you see this life? Is all about choice."
In the comments section, Amadi further elaborated, "I think this guy needs rehabs and not marriage. But what do I know?" This remark underscores her concern that Aboy might require rehabilitation or specialized care rather than a marital commitment.
Mixed Reactions from Social Media Users
The post sparked a flurry of responses from other Facebook users, reflecting diverse opinions on the matter. Esty Jesus commented on the rapid pace of the marriage proceedings, saying, "Biko when the babe take agree Bikonu? them come pay bride price, come do traditional marriage and today white wedding for info wey pastor bring 3days ago.its well oo." This highlights skepticism about the speed at which the wedding was arranged.
Maria Toby raised questions about the bride's ability to bear children, stating, "Abeg ooooooo, this woman go fit born pikin??? She never pass to born???? Congratulations. But if she no born, mek she get out oooooo." Meanwhile, Chinenye Marshal offered a more supportive perspective, noting, "Thank God she is not a small girl but a matured lady, I believed they will live together and she can handle his health crisis when ever it arises, be it by prayers and taking care of things with that man."
Background and Broader Context
The marriage has drawn attention not only for its unusual circumstances but also for the incentives involved. Reports indicate that the bride received significant gifts for agreeing to the union, fueling speculation about her motives. In related developments, the bride has since opened up about her reasons for marrying Aboy, though details remain sparse.
Apostle Chibuzor has also shared updates on changes observed in Aboy following the wedding, posting a picture of the couple and noting positive developments. While some critics have lambasted the woman for her decision, others have flooded social media with congratulatory messages, showcasing the polarized nature of public opinion.
This incident underscores broader discussions about marriage, disability, and societal norms in Nigeria, as people grapple with the ethics and implications of such arrangements. The controversy continues to unfold online, with many calling for greater transparency and consideration of Aboy's well-being in the midst of the celebratory fanfare.
