Joel Shoroye Overcomes Adversity to Earn First-Class Law Degree

Joel Shoroye, a Nigerian man, has achieved a first-class law degree from the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom, despite facing immense personal challenges including his mother's imprisonment and breast cancer diagnosis. Shoroye shared his inspiring journey on LinkedIn, detailing the obstacles he overcame to realize his dream of becoming a lawyer.

From Single Mother's Imprisonment to Academic Triumph

In 2013, Shoroye's single mother was imprisoned in Nigeria, and he did not see her for nearly half a decade. Despite this, he decided in 2014 that he would become a lawyer by any means necessary. From 2015 onward, he lost several childhood friends from Brixton to death or prison. He was also expelled from school twice, in 2020 and 2022.

Further Hardships: Suicide, Cancer, and Academic Struggles

In 2023, Shoroye lost his cousin to suicide. In November 2025, his mother called him while he was in the library to inform him she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. The following month, he scored only 55% in criminology, which made him fear his dreams were over. He spent his entire final year shuttling between lectures and hospital surgeries for his mother. He recalled taking his Law of Evidence exams in the waiting room of St Guy's Thomas Hospital as surgeons operated on his mother's chest.

He dedicated his achievement to his cousin and mother, stating, 'Act 1 done. We are just getting started. As always, all Glory and Honour to God.'
