Who Was Michael Ndika?
Michael Ndika, whose death was announced on Wednesday, was a Nigerian music executive and entrepreneur. He was best known as the founder of NaijaReview and as the long-term manager of Afro-house singer Niniola Apata, who was also his wife.
Fondly called Big Mike, Ndika worked behind the scenes in the Nigerian music industry. He was married to Niniola for 13 years. His entry into music came after a career in technology. He worked as a Systems Engineer and later as Head of IT at Associated Haulages, bringing a structured approach to artist management.
Founding NaijaReview
Ndika founded NaijaReview in February 2011 as a music blog, which later grew into a multimedia platform. At that time, global attention on Nigerian music was still years away. NaijaReview focused on Afro-house and contemporary African music, filling a gap in the ecosystem. The platform handled promotion, distribution, and artist development, becoming a recognized name in Nigerian entertainment.
Personal Life and Marriage to Niniola
Beyond NaijaReview, Ndika co-owned an NGO called Adopt-a-Child's Education. His connection with Niniola began in 2013 as a business negotiation. Niniola was trying to reach producer Sarz after her time on Project Fame West Africa, and Ndika, then managing Sarz, took her call. She later described him as firm on pricing, which led her to hire him as her manager. He started managing her around the release of her debut single 'Ibadi' in March 2014. Their professional relationship became personal, and they married privately. No public announcement was made, and Niniola denied being married as recently as October 2025.
Death and Legacy
The circumstances of Ndika's death have not been disclosed, nor his age. Public records of his work remain limited, reflecting his deliberate avoidance of the spotlight. He helped build an early platform for Afro-house and African music promotion in Nigeria.
