Nollywood veteran Olaiya Igwe has opened up about his complex relationship with his tribal marks, revealing that he personally begged for them as a child despite family traditions that dictated otherwise. The actor, known for his distinctive facial scars, shared his story in a recent interview with Agbaletu TV, offering insights into his upbringing and evolving perspective on this cultural practice.
A Childhood Fascination with Tribal Marks
Olaiya Igwe disclosed that he grew up in a large polygamous household where his father had six wives, though only five had children. His mother was the second-to-last wife. In their family tradition, only the firstborn child from each wife was mandated to have tribal marks. However, young Olaiya was captivated by how attractive and bold the marks looked on others, so he requested to have them himself. "I was very sharp, I requested for it," he recalled.
Regret After Understanding the History
Years later, after gaining a deeper understanding of the meaning and history behind tribal marks, Olaiya's feelings shifted dramatically. He began to dislike his own marks, realizing that the practice was not truly part of his culture but rather a result of lack of exposure. "When I eventually understood the meaning of tribal marks, I started to dislike it. I realised it wasn't really our culture; it was lack of exposure," he explained.
Questioning Practical Value in Modern Times
The actor also questioned whether tribal marks still hold practical value in today's society. He argued that modern technology, such as DNA testing, has made identification easier and more reliable. "Does it stand as DNA? No. These days, DNA can expose who truly belongs to a family," he noted. He pointed out that someone could mark every child believing they belong to one lineage, only for science to reveal otherwise.
Reconnection Through Fellow Actors
Despite his earlier regret, Olaiya Igwe experienced another change of heart after seeing legendary actors Ade Love and Sunday Omobolanle proudly carrying their tribal marks. Watching them helped him reconnect with that part of himself and appreciate his marks again. "Seeing them made me appreciate my marks again," he admitted.
