Tom Johnston: The Frontman Who Returned
Tom Johnston, born 15 August 1948, was the band's charismatic frontman during their peak in the 1970s. The 77-year-old vocalist and guitarist penned and sang legendary tracks such as Listen to the Music, Long Train Runnin', and China Grove. However, severe health issues forced him to step away in 1977, leading to the Michael McDonald era. Johnston pursued a solo career but made a triumphant return for the band's 1987 reunion. John Hartman: The Original Drummer
John Hartman, the band's original drummer, was born on 18 March 1950. He provided the driving rhythm on the Doobie Brothers' first eight albums before his initial departure in 1979. Hartman made brief returns in the late 1980s and early 1990s but eventually retired from music. He was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020. The band confirmed his passing in September 2022 at the age of 72, remembering him fondly as a "free spirit."
Dave Shogren: The First Bassist
Dave Shogren, born 12 October 1950, was the original bassist and a key founding member. He contributed to the band's self-titled debut album in 1971. However, creative disagreements with management led to his departure later that year, just as work began on the Toulouse Street album. Tragically, Shogren passed away in his sleep in December 1999 at the young age of 49.
