Ghanaian dancehall star Shatta Wale has finally opened up about the dramatic breakdown of his once-close friendship with Nigerian music icon Burna Boy. In a candid appearance on The Honest Bunch podcast, Shatta Wale alleged that the rift was triggered by a malicious rumour fabricated by former members of his own team, who falsely claimed he had an affair with Burna Boy's girlfriend during a visit to Ghana.
The Beginning of a Brotherhood
Shatta Wale recounted how the friendship began years ago when Burna Boy, before reaching international superstardom, personally reached out to him. According to Shatta Wale, Burna Boy was the only Nigerian artist who called him directly to announce his travel plans to Ghana. “Burna Boy is the only artiste who respectfully called me from Nigeria and told me he was coming to Ghana, that I should come and pick him up at the airport,” Shatta Wale said. “I have never done that for any artiste before in Nigeria, and I felt some way because I was like, I know Burna Boy, but that time he was in his low time, so we picked him up at the airport and brought him down.”
Shatta Wale went above and beyond to ensure Burna Boy’s stay was comfortable, providing him with a house, cars, and anything he needed. “I was treating Burna Boy like a king. I was showing him the ropes of Ghana like this is my town. I gave him a house, cars, and anything he needed. He wasn’t wasting money in Ghana,” he stated.

However, the relationship soured after Shatta Wale decided to dismiss several members of his team for alleged misconduct. He claimed he fired between five and seven individuals. “I had this team I was working with, and they were messing up. I actually told them I didn’t want to work with them anymore. All like 7 or 5 of these boys that I sacked were calling every rich man and special person in my life to tell them I’m having sex with their wives,” Shatta Wale alleged.
According to the Ghanaian star, the disgruntled ex-associates embarked on a calculated campaign to destroy his reputation by spreading false stories to influential figures in his life. Among those targeted was Burna Boy. “They told Burna Boy that I was f*cking his girl he brought to Ghana, and he just bought it. I had billionaire friends they called. They wanted to break me to everybody,” Shatta Wale said.

Instead, the Nigerian artist simply stopped responding to his messages. “When he left me in Ghana, things still went well, and when I saw Burna moving to places, I was always messaging him, and he didn’t reply. I didn’t know they told him that, and he decided not to talk to me,” he explained.
Reflecting on the fallout, Shatta Wale expressed hurt that Burna Boy never gave him a chance to explain his side. Despite the pain, he maintained a forgiving attitude: “I still hold no ill feelings towards Burna Boy.” He also noted that he has built his career independently and is grateful for that resilience.
