Fast-rising Nigerian singer Hamzat Talib Okino, known professionally as Ta Liebe, has stated that his primary focus is on creating meaningful music rather than pursuing temporary fame in the entertainment industry. In an exclusive interview with Guardian Life, the artist emphasized his commitment to making music that resonates deeply with listeners and endures across generations.
Chasing Impact, Not Fleeting Fame
Ta Liebe explained that his goal is to leave a lasting impression through his art. "I'm not chasing fleeting fame or temporary clout; I'm chasing impact. For me, music is a sacred vehicle for communication," he said. He criticized the current trend in the Nigerian music industry where many artists sound alike due to pressure to follow popular formulas. "In a landscape heavily saturated with carbon-copy artists and familiar sonic formulas, I strive to bring a refreshing sense of individuality to the table," he added.
Personal Struggles and Sacrifices
The singer revealed that his music draws inspiration from painful personal experiences, particularly the feeling of being held back by his environment despite believing in his talent. "The deepest pain has been the agonizing feeling of being held back by my environment and immediate circumstances, knowing exactly what I was capable of but being unable to freely chase my dreams," he stated. He admitted that there were moments he nearly abandoned music because progress seemed slow and uncertain. "To be honest, I carried that heavy feeling with me every single day for the first few years. When you are pouring your soul into something and things just seem like they are going nowhere, moving forward starts to feel completely impossible," he said.
Industry Realities and Introversion
Ta Liebe also spoke about the hidden struggles of upcoming artists in the Nigerian music industry. "The truth that everyone keeps under wraps is that almost nobody actually has it completely figured out. There is a massive, exhausting culture of posturing and pretending in this industry," he noted. On a personal level, he described himself as an introvert, contrasting his online persona with his real-life personality. "Online, it looks like I am constantly out there interacting and living the high-energy artist life. The reality is that I am a deep introvert," he explained.
Looking Ahead
Looking to the future, Ta Liebe expressed a desire to be remembered as an artist whose music carried timeless messages and emotional honesty, rather than one who followed temporary trends. His sacrifices included delaying personal dreams and ambitions while handling family responsibilities and outside expectations. "The biggest sacrifice was my time and personal autonomy. Delaying your own purpose for the sake of others is a heavy price to pay," he concluded.
