Actress Damilola Oni Reveals Disturbing Online Harassment and Industry Struggles
Nollywood actress Damilola Oni has publicly disclosed her distressing experiences with persistent online harassment, alleging that male followers frequently send her explicit messages and unsolicited nude photos and videos through her Instagram direct messages. The actress shared these troubling revelations during a recent interview on Oyinmomo TV, where she discussed her personal life and the numerous challenges she faces within the competitive entertainment industry.
Explicit Content Floods Social Media Inbox
Damilola Oni described how her Instagram direct messages are regularly inundated with inappropriate and sexually explicit content from male followers. "Early in the morning when I open my Instagram, men will send me their manhood, saying I am everything you need baby. All sorts of dicks are in my DM," the actress revealed with evident frustration. She further explained that some individuals go beyond sending explicit photos, with messages stating they watched her on television and used her image to masturbate.
The actress emphasized that this constant stream of unsolicited explicit material represents a significant form of online harassment that affects her daily life and mental wellbeing. She expressed concern about how such behavior has become normalized on social media platforms, particularly targeting female celebrities in the entertainment industry.
Industry Challenges Beyond Online Harassment
Beyond the disturbing online harassment, Damilola Oni discussed broader challenges within Nollywood's competitive landscape. The actress, who confirmed she is currently single, noted that the entertainment industry often prioritizes hype over genuine talent. "The hyped ones excel more than the talented, you have to spice it up because that's what will make you relevant," she observed, highlighting how visibility sometimes trumps actual skill in determining success.
Oni recounted a particularly difficult experience on a movie set where she was removed from a lead role due to a colleague's refusal to work with her. Despite waiting on set for more than eight hours, she was ultimately offered only a minor role after the producer was forced to choose between her and the other actor. "The person said I should choose between you and him and I can't choose you over him," she recalled the producer telling her.
Educational Background Provides Professional Advantage
Despite these challenges, Damilola Oni remains determined to advance her career in Nollywood. The actress credits her background in linguistics for providing valuable communication skills that help her navigate the industry's complexities. "Being a linguist has really helped in shaping my career," she explained, noting that understanding language helps her express herself effectively and employ appropriate diplomacy in professional interactions.
Oni also expressed strong passion for promoting Yoruba culture through her work, describing it as rich and endlessly explorable. She believes the global entertainment landscape needs greater exposure to Nigeria's cultural heritage, and she sees her platform as an opportunity to contribute to this cultural promotion.
YouTube Provides Alternative Platform for Actors
Regarding the increasing trend of Nollywood films being released directly on YouTube, Damilola Oni views the platform positively as it offers actors opportunities to reach wider audiences without traditional industry barriers. "I am happy there is a platform where I don't need to go through rigorous processes to get my content out for the world to see," she stated, acknowledging YouTube's role in democratizing content distribution for Nigerian actors.
The actress concluded by reaffirming her commitment to her career despite the obstacles, emphasizing that no one can force her out of the industry she's passionate about. Her revelations shed light on both the personal harassment female celebrities face online and the systemic challenges within Nigeria's entertainment sector that require greater attention and reform.
