How Mayorkun's mother revealed his record deal with Davido

Veteran Nollywood actress Toyin Adewale has opened up about the inspiring story of how her son, Nigerian singer Mayorkun, first connected with music superstar Davido. The revelation came during an interview on the show Talk To B, where she detailed the events that led to Mayorkun's rise in the music industry.

The Viral Cover That Started It All

Mayorkun first captured national attention after recording a cover of Davido's hit song 'The Money'. The cover quickly went viral, catching the eye of Davido himself. However, the initial contact was met with skepticism from Mayorkun's family. 'After the cover he did went viral, he was with his brother when Davido sent a message, but we thought it was a scammer,' Adewale recalled.

From Doubt to a Life-Changing Call

Despite their doubts, Davido persisted. He promised to call Mayorkun, and when he did, the excitement was overwhelming. 'I was there when Davido called him, and he was so excited he almost went crazy,' Adewale said. During the call, Davido praised the cover and requested Mayorkun's measurements, stating he would be back in town the following week.

Meeting Davido and the Start of a Partnership

Upon Davido's return, Mayorkun and his brother went to meet him. Davido welcomed them with a full box of gifts and money. Adewale admitted she was initially scared because she did not know who Davido was. 'The next day, they went back, and that was when they recorded 'Eleko'. It was easy for Mayorkun because he had always loved writing poems and was in the choir,' she explained. After the recording session, Mayorkun and his brother moved in with Davido.

A Mother's Visit and a Respectful Star

When Adewale eventually visited the place where her son was staying, she was impressed by Davido's demeanor. 'When I got there, Davido was very pleasant and respectful,' she said. This meeting marked the beginning of a fruitful relationship that saw Mayorkun signed to Davido Music Worldwide (DMW) from 2016 to 2021.

Mayorkun's Journey After DMW

Mayorkun later left DMW in 2021 and released his second album, 'Back In Office', under Sony Music West Africa. His mother's account highlights the serendipitous chain of events that launched his career, from a viral cover to a life-changing connection with one of Africa's biggest music stars.
