Popular Nollywood actress Nkechi Blessing Sunday has opened up about a shocking and controversial script she was offered at the very beginning of her acting journey, which she immediately turned down.
The Bizarre Script That Crossed The Line
During a recent appearance on The Honest Bunch podcast, the actress recounted one of her first-ever professional opportunities. She disclosed that she was presented with a script that required her character to sleep with a dog.
Nkechi Blessing Sunday stated firmly that she rejected the role without hesitation. "Despite being a newcomer, I was given a script to sleep with a dog. I rejected it because I can’t start off my career like that," she explained. "Imagine my first ever movie, I am sleeping with a dog. It doesn't make sense."
Protecting Her Image and Career Trajectory
The actress, who recently made headlines for addressing a leaked gym photo, emphasized that her decision was strategic and focused on her long-term reputation in the competitive film industry.
"It is going to be a tag because whatever you start with is what people would associate you with," she noted. "I didn’t want to be renowned as someone who sleeps with dogs in movies."
She revealed that after she refused the part, several other actresses accepted the script. However, Nkechi Blessing expressed uncertainty about whether any of those actresses have maintained a visible presence in Nollywood today.
The Breakthrough That Followed
Following her principled stand, her career took a positive turn when she met veteran filmmaker Emeka Duru. Duru provided crucial guidance and mentorship, eventually connecting her with a project that would become her legitimate debut.
That project was the film 'Through The Fire', directed by Imem Isong. This role marked the proper start of her acting career. "That’s how my career began properly," she said. "I am grateful for the opportunity because it set the tone for my journey in the industry."
The incident sheds light on the difficult and often compromising choices that fresh faces in Nollywood must navigate, balancing the urgent need for work and income against the potential long-term damage to their public image and career path.
