The Nigerian movie industry has been plunged into mourning once again following the death of veteran Yoruba actor, dramatist, and scholar Kola Oyewo at the age of 80. The sad news emerged on social media late Friday, June 12, 2026, after a post by his junior colleague Olorunlaiye Yomi on Instagram.

Sharing a picture of the late actor, Yomi captioned it: "Rest in peace Baba Kola Oyewo Labaluyege, orun ire o." Fellow actor Kunle Afod also confirmed the death, writing: "Tonight, we lost a true legend. Kola Oyewo has taken his final bow. His remarkable talent, timeless performances, and immense contributions to the Nigerian theatre and film industry will never be forgotten. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. Health Struggles Before Death

Before his demise, Oyewo had opened up about his health challenges in a 2024 video with Kunle Afod. The actor, who lost his wife in 2020, recounted how doctors diagnosed him with an enlarged prostate that hindered urination. He described undergoing multiple surgeries, scans, and tests before recovering.

Academic and Acting Career

Oyewo attended Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), earning certificates in dramatic arts and Yoruba oral literature, followed by a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Art in 1995. He later obtained a Master of Arts and a Ph.D. in drama from the University of Ibadan. He was renowned for his roles in iconic films such as Sango, Saworoide, The Gods Are Not To Blame, and Oleku.
