AIDDN Champions Inclusive Support for Down Syndrome on Global Awareness Day
In observance of World Down Syndrome Day, the Association for Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities of Nigeria has reiterated its dedication to bolstering parents and caregivers of individuals with Down syndrome throughout the country. The organization is aligning with families, advocates, service providers, and communities across Nigeria to honor the capabilities, dignity, and societal contributions of those with Down syndrome, while amplifying demands for more robust support frameworks for their caregivers.
Emphasizing Rights and Addressing Isolation
The association emphasized that persons with Down syndrome are integral members of society, possessing unique talents, aspirations, and rights that warrant acknowledgment and respect. This year's theme, "Together Against Loneliness," highlights the imperative for collaborative efforts to combat isolation and foster a sense of connection and inclusion for these individuals.
Joko Omotola, National President of AIDDN, pointed out that despite advancements in healthcare and education, many persons with Down syndrome continue to encounter obstacles in accessing quality medical care, educational opportunities, employment, and community assistance. "Equally crucial are the parents and caregivers who offer daily care, advocacy, and affection. As a nation, we must guarantee that support for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities encompasses sustained and accessible services for families and caregivers—ranging from quality healthcare and inclusive education to job prospects, respite care, mental health resources, and financial stability," he stated.
Key Initiatives and Policy Advocacy
For the 2026 commemoration, AIDDN has outlined several key activities, including:
- Nationwide events to raise awareness and promote inclusion.
- Media engagements to amplify voices and share experiences.
- Self-advocacy forums designed to showcase best practices and empower individuals.
The association has also appealed to federal and state policymakers to adopt and implement the Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Policy. This policy should focus on:
- Expanding community-based services to enhance accessibility.
- Increasing funding for inclusive education and assistive devices.
- Strengthening home and community support systems.
- Funding caregiver respite and mental health programmes to alleviate burdens.
Investing in Caregiver Support for Better Outcomes
AIDDN further advocated for greater investment in caregiver training, peer support networks, counselling services, respite care, and financial assistance to help families thrive. The organization underscored the pivotal role parents and caregivers play in facilitating access to healthcare, education, employment, and community integration for persons with Down syndrome.
"Supporting caregivers is not optional—it is essential to achieving the best outcomes for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities. When caregivers have access to respite, training, mental health services, and financial support, families become more stable, stress diminishes, and persons with Down syndrome attain improved long-term results," the association added.
