CIHP Unveils Essential Newborn Care Package to Tackle Preventable Infant Deaths
The Centre for Integrated Health Programs (CIHP) has officially launched the Essential Newborn Care Package, a strategic initiative designed to significantly reduce preventable infant deaths and enhance newborn survival rates throughout Nigeria. This comprehensive program aims to equip healthcare providers, families, and communities with vital knowledge and resources to improve neonatal care outcomes.
Addressing Critical Healthcare Gaps
During the launch event, CIHP Chief Executive Officer, Bolanle Oyeledun, emphasized the urgent need for intervention, highlighting that many newborn fatalities in Nigeria stem from preventable conditions such as suffocation, infections, bleeding, and jaundice. She stressed that the initiative goes beyond mere policy formulation, focusing on practical implementation to reach even the most remote areas.
"We are committed to ensuring these guidelines are not just launched and stored on shelves, but actively disseminated to every corner of the country," Oyeledun stated. "Our goal is to empower every caregiver with the essential knowledge to help newborns not only survive but thrive."
She further explained that the package promotes evidence-based interventions like Kangaroo Mother Care, which involves skin-to-skin contact to support preterm infants, particularly in low-resource settings where advanced medical equipment may be scarce.
Government Support and Strategic Implementation
In his remarks, John Ovouraye, Director of Family Health at the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, praised the initiative as a pivotal step toward strengthening newborn healthcare delivery in Nigeria. He described the launch as a strategic milestone in the nation's efforts to improve neonatal survival and bolster the overall health system.
"This engagement represents more than just another meeting; it is a crucial advancement in our journey to enhance newborn care and align with national health priorities," Ovouraye asserted.
He disclosed that five key national documents are being disseminated as part of the package, including:
- The Nigeria Every Newborn Action Plan
- Kangaroo Mother Care guidelines
- Essential Newborn Care guidelines
- A roadmap for scaling up newborn care commodities
Ovouraye emphasized that these documents are interconnected tools designed to address existing gaps in newborn care, supporting national goals such as universal health coverage and primary healthcare strengthening. He called on state governments and health stakeholders to domesticate the guidelines, integrate them into local health plans, and ensure effective execution at all levels.
Rollout and Future Prospects
According to CIHP, the Essential Newborn Care Package will be implemented over the next 12 months through extensive training programs at state, local government, and community levels. This phased approach aims to foster widespread adoption and sustainable impact, ultimately contributing to a significant reduction in infant mortality rates across Nigeria.
