Nigerian Woman Reveals Enhanced Health Eight Months After Kidney Donation to Stranger
A 44-year-old Nigerian woman, known as Toks, has publicly shared her health status eight months after donating one of her kidneys to a stranger in London. In a detailed TikTok video, Toks explained that she feels stronger and fitter than ever before, despite living with only one kidney.
Motivation Behind the Altruistic Act
Toks, who is originally from Lagos but was in London at the time of the donation, disclosed that her decision was rooted in a long history of charitable acts. She began donating blood at the age of 18 and has volunteered with the African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust (ACLT) for years. Her initial plan was to donate a kidney to a friend, but when they were not a match, she considered other recipients. After learning about living kidney donation and realizing that humans only need one kidney to survive, she agreed to become an altruistic donor for a stranger when approached by a nurse.
She stated in her video:"I started donating blood when I was 18 years old. For me, the notion of giving back has always been a value that I uphold through my actions and deeds. Once I found out about living kidney donation, it was an easy option for me to say yes."Health and Fitness Post-Donation
Contrary to concerns about potential health issues, Toks reported that her overall well-being has significantly improved since the surgery. She emphasized that she looks and feels excellent, to the point where others would not suspect she has only one kidney unless informed. Currently back in Lagos, she continues to maintain an active lifestyle, including running, although she noted that the tropical climate and safety concerns in the city have restricted her training times.
In her own words:
"What I really wanted to share is since I donated my kidney, I actually feel like this is the fittest and the strongest I've ever been in my 44 years of being on this planet. I look good, I feel good, and if I didn't tell you, you wouldn't know that I just have one kidney."Clarification on Compensation and Public Reaction
When questioned in the comments section of her video about whether she received payment for the donation, Toks clarified that it is illegal to be paid for organ donation in the United Kingdom. She was, however, reimbursed for loss of wages during her recovery period. Her story has garnered widespread admiration online, with many users praising her selflessness and expressing curiosity about her health.
Notable reactions included:
- Flora jay? said: "U saved a soul❤️God bless you beyond limit, goodness and mercy follow you all the days of your life."
- Yeancute ?? asked: "I don’t know how to ask this question. Like healthwise, are you really okay, I mean very fit?? No health issue or anything?"
- Tèmídayọ̀ ? commented: "It’s illegal to get paid for organ donation but they charge very high fees for organ transplants. Make it make sense pls."
Encouragement for Others to Give Back
Toks used her platform to encourage others to engage in acts of kindness, suggesting that people can start by donating blood or volunteering their time. She highlighted that every contribution, no matter how small, can make a significant difference. Her message aligns with her longstanding commitment to philanthropy and community service.
She concluded:
"So if you've ever thought about it, you don't have to donate a kidney. You can start by donating blood. You can start by donating your time. But trust me, every little thing counts. And every little helps. Peace."This inspiring account comes amid related stories of organ donation, such as a lady who donated a kidney to save her mother's life and another who declined a request from her father for a kidney. Toks's experience serves as a powerful reminder of the impact of altruism and the resilience of the human body.
