Oyo State Launches Major Health Outreach for World TB Day 2026 Across 33 LGAs

The Oyo State Government has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to eradicating Tuberculosis (TB) as it joined the global community in commemorating the 2026 World Tuberculosis Day. This significant occasion was marked by the official flag-off of comprehensive integrated health outreaches spanning all 33 local government areas within the state.

Event Highlights and Government Commitment

The ceremony, held at the Molete Primary Health Centre in Ibadan, served as a powerful demonstration of the state's renewed and intensified efforts to combat TB through enhanced access to diagnosis, treatment, and robust community-based interventions. Governor Seyi Makinde's administration is spearheading this initiative to address a critical public health challenge.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, addressed attendees, describing tuberculosis as a major public health challenge with profound social and economic repercussions. However, she provided a message of hope, emphasizing that TB is both preventable and curable when addressed with timely and appropriate medical interventions.

Strategic Approaches and Key Interventions

The state government is implementing a multi-faceted, evidence-based strategy to tackle the disease. This comprehensive plan includes:

  • Early detection through advanced screening methods.
  • Effective treatment protocols to ensure patient recovery.
  • Strengthened community engagement to foster local participation and awareness.

These efforts are bolstered by sustained investment in primary healthcare infrastructure and overall health system strengthening. Aligning with the 2026 theme, “Yes! We Can End TB!”, Commissioner Ajetunmobi stressed the urgent need for increased collaboration and additional funding to bridge existing gaps in diagnosis and treatment, noting that many TB cases currently remain undetected.

Key operational interventions highlighted include:

  1. The decentralization of TB services to primary healthcare facilities for wider accessibility.
  2. Active case finding through dedicated outreach teams visiting communities.
  3. The deployment of modern diagnostic tools to significantly improve early detection rates and treatment outcomes.

Community Involvement and Stigma Reduction

Commissioner Ajetunmobi made a passionate appeal to residents and all stakeholders to actively support efforts aimed at reducing the stigma associated with tuberculosis. She encouraged the public to promote early health-seeking behavior, particularly for individuals experiencing a persistent cough lasting more than two weeks, which is a primary symptom of TB.

As a core component of the World TB Day activities, the commissioner officially launched the integrated health outreaches across the state. These outreaches will provide free screening, testing, and counselling services not only for tuberculosis but also for HIV and malaria, offering a holistic approach to public health.

Funding and Collaborative Support

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Mr. Kehinde Ayinde, disclosed that the state government has already released counterpart funding specifically designated to strengthen TB control programmes. He urged all stakeholders to intensify their collaborative efforts in line with the national drive encapsulated by the motto: “Led by Government, Powered by the People.”

The event garnered commendation and pledges of continued support from several key development partners. Organizations including the World Health Organization (WHO), Damien Foundation Belgium, Christianah Olawumi Foundation, Apin Public Health Initiative, and the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria praised the Oyo State Government for its measurable progress in TB control and reiterated their commitment to collaborative efforts aimed at eradicating the disease.

This landmark event underscores Oyo State's vigorous and renewed push to eliminate tuberculosis and enhance public health outcomes through inclusive, community-driven, and strategically funded approaches, setting a precedent for comprehensive healthcare intervention in the region.
