Federal Government Pledges Enhanced Support for Oral Healthcare Initiatives
The Federal Government has reiterated its dedication to reinforcing policies and programs designed to elevate and advance oral healthcare services throughout Nigeria. This commitment was articulated by the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Adekunle Salako, during a ceremony in Abuja commemorating World Oral Health Day, which carried the theme “A Happy Mouth is a Happy Life.”
Impact of Oral Diseases on National Development
Dr. Salako, represented by the Director of Hospital Services, Abisola Adegoke, underscored that oral ailments profoundly influence children's developmental growth, adult work productivity, and the broader trajectory of national progress. He emphasized that routine oral hygiene practices are not merely cosmetic but are integral to overall health and wellness.
Strategic Integration and Expansion of Services
The government has initiated the integration of oral healthcare into primary healthcare frameworks, thereby broadening access to cost-effective dental treatments and championing preventive strategies at the community level. “We have integrated oral healthcare into our primary healthcare services, expanded access to affordable dental care, and are providing education, prevention and basic care closer to communities,” Dr. Salako stated.
Furthermore, community health workers are undergoing specialized training to detect and refer serious oral conditions, including noma and cleft lip and palate. Concurrently, school-based initiatives and outreach campaigns are being deployed to instill healthy oral habits among the younger population.
Collaborative Efforts and Outreach Achievements
Dr. Salako highlighted ongoing partnerships with entities such as the World Health Organisation, Médecins Sans Frontières, and the Noma AIDs Nigeria Initiative to tackle neglected oral diseases. He praised the Nigerian Dental Association for its extensive outreach, which has benefited over 2.4 million Nigerians across more than 20 states and the Federal Capital Territory. The government aims to extend these efforts to three million individuals this year through oral health education and service provisions.
Memorandum of Understanding with Colgate
In a significant development, the ministry has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Colgate to train Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWs) in fundamental oral healthcare and to bolster school-based educational programs. This collaboration is expected to amplify the reach and effectiveness of oral health initiatives.
Call for Collective Responsibility
Dr. Salako stressed that enhancing oral health is a shared duty, urging all Nigerians to embrace preventive measures such as brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, reducing sugar consumption, abstaining from tobacco, and scheduling regular dental check-ups.

Earlier at the event, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Daju Kachollom, represented by Gloria Uzoigwe, remarked that the occasion underscores oral health's critical role in overall well-being, noting that many preventable oral diseases are often overlooked until they escalate in severity.
Additionally, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Richard Pheelangwa, represented by Dr. Uchenna Ekwenibe, observed that the theme serves as a poignant reminder that oral care transcends mere disease prevention, significantly enhancing life quality.
