UNICEF and Ondo State Government Forge Stronger Alliance Against Lassa Fever
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has significantly bolstered its collaboration with the Ondo State Government to escalate efforts in preventing Lassa fever and amplifying public awareness across the state. This strategic move was underscored during a recent courtesy visit by UNICEF representatives to the Commissioner for Information and Orientation in Akure, marking a pivotal step in addressing this persistent health threat.
Key Discussions and Commitments
During the meeting, Mrs. Aderonke Akinola-Akinwole, a Social and Behaviour Change Specialist at UNICEF, expressed deep concern over the ongoing prevalence of Lassa fever in Nigeria, labeling it as a major public health challenge. She emphasized that UNICEF's interventions are concentrated on:
- Enhancing awareness about the causes, prevention, and control of Lassa fever.
- Addressing environmental factors that contribute to the disease's spread, which she noted require urgent government attention.
- Expanding sensitization efforts across communities in Ondo State through increased support from the ministry.
In response, Hon. Idowu Ajanaku, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, lauded UNICEF for its reliable partnership with the state government, particularly in health communication and development initiatives. He assured the delegation of the state's unwavering commitment to supporting public health campaigns, especially those targeting disease outbreaks like Lassa fever.
Government's Proactive Measures and Future Plans
The commissioner highlighted that the Ondo State Government is dedicated to deepening collaboration through the ministry to ensure broader public sensitization. He stressed that maintaining a healthy population is a top priority for the administration. Additionally, Ajanaku commended the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Banji Ajaka, for upholding effective health protocols across state facilities and noted the government's prompt responses to reported Lassa fever cases.
Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their partnership in health communication and community engagement.
